I agree that in order to credit these statistics you would need to know the methods of gaining them and compare it to a similar study with effective methods for measuring the rate of abuse in civi women - in order to draw any conclusions on whether abuse is higher in working girls. And then you are still left with the question of "what does that mean, is it of relevance, and how do we react to it?"
However, it also works the same for the personal accounts in this thread. A few girls have mentioned not ever being sexually assulted (which is great!) but doesn't really give us a perspective on whether it happens, because the girls who have been assulted aren't really going to speak up to compare.
I can say that in my personal experience in this business (which also doesn't help us draw any conclusions) I have met about 30 working girls - from low end to high end - and discussed this issue. I am sad to say that nearly ALL of them confided in me that they had been "significantly" abused as children.
Just wanted to add that to the 'personal experience pot'. But I also know a lot of civi women who have been too. Maybe it's my nature to befriend people with histories as I can relate - so that throws off the sample as well. And does that mean anything about whether they should 'work' - I don't want to touch that issue with a ten foot pole till I am older and wiser.
I also see a lot of people making the distinction between street walkers and high end girls. I just want to say that I think when it comes to high end girls - they have good heads on their shoulders (for whatever reasons) and would probably seek counselling and not feel the need to 'self report' to clients or friends as that could hurt their image as a strong self made woman. A good high end girl knows what a client should NOT hear. Whereas a drug addicted street girl would be more emotionally unstable due to the stresses in her life. I think those points are worth considering. All levels of class get abused.
