It seems everybody has no compassion for the student. She is six years old.
IF it was your daughter/ son I am sure you would be livid!
The child did NOTHING except have a temper tantrum and the school could not handle it so they decided to involve the cops. No matter which way you try to spin it, its wrong. No if , and or buts. I guess I was raised different than everybody who is saying this is ok.

Just for future reference "On the day of the incident, the child’s mother said she received three missed phone calls from the school before calling them back while she was at work."

There was only ONE INCDIENT. to which the school called the mother three times before contacting police who immediately upon arrival handcuffed the girl. Following the incident the mother kept the girl at home and switched her to a new school where she is now doing extremely well.
All I hear is you blabbering how this is wrong and not right.
What in your opinion is the right thing to do?

Please do not spin the facts but rather offer an alternative option to resolve this.

YOU do not know if it was only a temper tantrum that the child was having. If it was only that, you think no one at the whole school could not handle it? Cops are involve when it is a severe case. (how many school need to call cops, 3 times for the same girl nonetheless!) It was NOT just one incident as you so lightly understated. I ask you please DO NOT CHANGE THE FACTS! It was multiple incidents! And this was the 3rd strike for this girl.
Police told CTV News Toronto that this was the third time they were called to the school to deal with this child in particular.

Again, in your opinion, how do you think this situation should be resolved if not handcuffs?
Offer a solution rather than changing and making up facts as you had done in a few of your posts.

I'm not a parent, but I've seen my nephews and nieces go into screaming and kicking fits. And even my brother has trouble restraining them. Have fun trying to grab and hold a kid yelling and flailing their arms. And this isn't even in public, where there's always an extra sense of crisis and people are watching and the last thing someone wants is their kid destroying property or hitting another person. At least at home (where I've seen it), it's all contained within the house and nobody else can see it.

According to the article, the kid was acting like a nut. And has happened numerous times.

I guess a teacher or cop could have just grabbed her and hold her down instead of cuffing her, but it's probably easier to cuff her instead of having a 6 year old screaming and trying to worm their way out of a tight hold.

Man, kids are f'ed up now. Growing up, I never saw the cops called once during elementary school, jr high or high school. And it's not like I went to fancy high end private schools. Just your normal public schools which ever one is closest to your house.

Kids sure seem like brats in modern times. You'd never see any kid (even a 6 year old) going into wacko fits where the teacher and cops have to be called. You have some whininess, some fights at recess and such, but never so overboard where cops get called.... especially in elementary school. Even the handicapped class of 10 students (where some of them acted in a very unpredictable way) didn't go into wacko fits like this needing serious intervention from cops.

LOLOL ! you need to read the article again. She had been suspended three previous times before after the third time the school should have just expelled her. There is no reason why a SIX YEAR OLD 48 LB GIRL should be in handcuffs! and on top of that forced into them ! You think she voluntarily said "yes handcuff me?" Come on lets get real people. I may be blabbering that it is wrong and not right but that is MY OPINION , and in the great country of Canada I am ENTITLED to free speech. Which means I can say what I want ,when I want. If you disagree with me that's fine.

" the kid was acting like a nut " translates to the kid was having a temper tantrum ! she is six years old people ! not sixteen! she can not do any physical harm. Even if she hit another student the school could have just expelled her !

Probably easier to cuff her.

If a teacher or cop decided to actually grab her and hold her, I can see the parent reacting worse since an adult actually touched her. By cuffing her, it solves the issue and doesn't have have an adult actually manhandling her.

A 6 year being suspended 3 times is all I need to know. I think the only time I heard of any kid at my schools getting suspended was in high school.

The child had previously been suspended by the school on four separate occasions but this time, efforts to calm her down did not work, says Carla Pereira, manager of communications for the Peel District School Board.

"At some point, if you're not able to [de-escalate] and you believe the child is at risk to themselves or to others, what staff are able to do is contact first responders," Pereira said.

Peel police officers arrived on the scene and weren't able to calm down the child, either. Officers then handcuffed the six-year-old's hands and feet for "the safety of other students and ultimately the child," Peel Regional Police spokesman Sgt. Josh Colley said.

"No police officer wants to walk into this situation, nor do we want to restrain a child. But their safety is our number one priority," Colley added.
Girl got suspended 4 times already!

"From a legal standpoint, we have a few issues here," said Danardo Jones, director of legal services at the clinic.

"There's issues around anti-Black racism; whether or not the actions taken by police and school officials were based on anti-Black sentiment. We would argue that it is," Jones added.

When I was 6 if I acted up and ended up in handcuffs at school that would have been the least painful part of my day.

Cops were called on THREE occasions.

lmao wow. Arrogance at its finest! I'm going to agree to disagree with you. I know that if that was your child you would be livid. BTW, Mother filed lawsuit so there is something obviously not right here.
Wanting my child to be in a placement where he or she can experience success is arrogant? I have no idea of what your definition of arrogance is but it's not the definition from Webster's.

It sure sucks when people pull out the race card. You never know, maybe the cops and teachers are total KKK guys with a focus on getting the black kid suspended. I doubt it though.

What also suck is when someone brings out the race card, even when there is something they did which is also at fault, notice have absolutely ZERO of them ever take any kind of blame?

I find it hard to believe this kid is the angel the mom promotes she is. If she's had numerous incidents at the age of 6 (including suspensions), I highly doubt in the rest of her like, she does zero incidents.

REGARDLESS, the school should have expelled her after her third suspension! That's how it was when i was in school.. If you were suspended three times and you got in trouble a fourth time you were gone ! That simple ! They could have called her mom and kept her in the principals office until the mom arrived. So what if she cried , or threw stuff around the room , i highly doubt she would have caused herself any harm, let alone other students!

Let me handcuff one of your kids , or anyone elses 6 year old kid for that matter and see how you feel after your child comes crying to you traumatized by the fact that she/ he was put in handcuffs . I'm pretty sure if it was your kid your reaction would be way different.

As for the race thing, for all we know maybe it was, we were not there so who are we to judge/ say anything!

You don't see it, do you?
LOL, so girl is going nut and causing trouble and you say expel her. Well, in order for that to happen she will have to leave the school property which in this case she is unwilling and causing trouble.
How will you solve this? While she is still on school property and going nuts and endangering the safety of not only herself but others as well?

Put her in the principal room? Well, she needs to be moved there first. Would you manhandle her and drag her there is you were the officer? Would that not be a lawsuit as well? It's worse than handcuffs.

The cops did the right thing due to the situation where safety is main concern. I don't see this lawsuit going anywhere. (unless she's the only person of colour at the school which makes it blatant the school want her gone, highly untrue)

While the incident is unfortunate, I sincerely doubt there will be long-term trauma. Given that this took place in Sept 2016, already FIVE MONTHS AGO, the short-term embarrassment has likely passed as well. The kid will gradually forget about it provided her mom stops bringing it up, and now that she's at a new school it's not like the general school population is going to harp on it when they weren't there to witness it in the first place.

I'm not going to say whether the cops were right or wrong to restrain both her hands and ankles, as the article said she was both punching AND kicking.

What I am going to say is that in the nebulous ether that is a child's long-term memory, this will pass. Yes she might fear police a bit, but that's probably not a bad thing - might even scare her to being on the straight and narrow, and given that she's the product of a single-parent family where discipline might be lacking, this might be a blessing in disguise.

Not every bad thing that happens to a kid is traumatic: when I was in PRE-SCHOOL (i.e. age 4) in the early 1980's my teacher once duct-taped my mouth to teach me to stop talking over her in class. The duct tape was on me for maybe 10 minutes, and I cried (though like a typical stupid kid, sat there and took the punishment rather than just take the damn thing off). Was it humiliating at the time? Sure. Am I surprised I still remember the incident? Yes. But did it give me a pathological fear of tape, restraints, or authority figures? NO. It was an isolated lesson in proper behavior and if she hadn't done it, my Jamaican parents would have whooped my ass when I got home anyway if they'd heard about it so one way or another I was going to be DISCIPLINED.

This is a word that kids and parents today need to reacquaint themselves with: DISCIPLINE. You, the parent(s), are NOT their friend: you are there to mold them into hopefully productive and well-adjusted members of society, ideally by non-violent means (but provided you don't go crazy on them even a little tap on the bum is fine). It is not the teacher's job to teach your kid to be a decent human being, they are there expand their minds, and given the litigious society we now live in, it's no wonder they don't want to risk themselves - back in the day if a teacher told my parents I was acting the fool, my parents took them AT THEIR WORD and then proceeded to whoop my ass into shape; now when you tell a parent "their little angel" is being disruptive in class, they say "I don't think you're right (even though I'm not in the classroom to witness it myself)".

Take a Valium please you are going overboard here. Most people agree that a 6 year old shouldn't be handcuffed, but we weren't there so wait I suggest you wait for the details.

I knew this thread would be here when I saw the news yesterday and I just had to reply. To all those who say the cops didn't need to handcuff her - You are completely ignorant to the issues of these types of special needs children.

1. This child should be in a BAC class or a behavioural alternative day program.
2. Once in that program - mom would have already signed off on use of force and restraining when required, which this would have been a case for that.
3. The child would have been taken to a restraint room. Where 2 staff would be physically holding the child down on the ground, arms and legs completely spread with no way to move at all. The struggling child would come home with bruises but that is the reality of this child's continued behaviour. Having witnessed this before, I feel more for this type of restraining, then I do some cuffs on.

Now having said that, the child is not in one of those classes. Mom could have refused a spot for many reasons, or maybe spacing is not available. So the only recourse right now is police.

If the police had of picked up the child and the child was bruised because of it which is likely because of the grip that would have been needed to keep the child under control - there would be a lawsuit
If the police left things alone and just tried to talk to the child and the child did hurt someone or herself - there would be a lawsuit.

The police used the tools and devices {which let's be real, you act like that in the public at an older age and cuffs are coming on, so maybe this child needs to learn that ASAP} and are now going to be faced with a lawsuit. They are bound by the rule of law and the tools that law provided. In this situation, the tools available are next to nil because normal 6 year olds don't cause these issues. There are no sponge bob cuffs, or restraining devices available to them. Not to mention the teachers and let's not forget - the police put the cuffs on her ankles first to stop the kicking and to show this little girl what will happen if she continues. She continued with the punching and they cuffed her hands. They had no other alternatives at their LEGAL disposal at the time.

The police were going to end up in a law suit no matter what. The bleeding hearts who think that children do not wrong, and who are raising children to be entitled, spoiled, and lawless are going to have issue with this, but never have an alternative solution. They are never going to respect the rights of the other 29 kids in the class that have to deal with this child's consist negative behaviour. This child is 6! The police have been called 3 times, the child has been suspended 4 times. Get the child into the proper programs for help and police will not be needed, but I can promise you that kid will be face down with two staff restraining her for many years to come, even in a proper program.

As for the race bullshit - I am going to call it exactly that BULL FUCKING SHIT!!!!!! I can promise you there have been white children under the age of 12, male children mind you, that I know of who have been handcuffed in a school setting for behaviour issues while awaiting parents to pick up the child. I have witnessed two case when my kids were in grade school 10 years ago and no media was called, no lawsuits filed. Why? because people looked at the situation properly and saw it for what it was.

So race has no place here, but hey - it looks good on the lawsuit for the poor single mom. Personally I think it is quite pathetic. Focus on getting your child the help she needs, instead of focusing on a hopeful big payout as a reward for your child's deplorable behaviour.

Now forewarning - I am sure someone will want to quote me and post in reply, but I am not here on TERB enough, nor do I care enough about this situation or thread, to come back and reply. So if you are going to quote me, please don't be offended when I don't reply.
