The Metro here in Mississauga also will be, or is now charging 5cents for bags. wtf... I was also reusing the bags for garbage.

The problem is that reusable bags collect bacteria and other nasty stuff. Now if the juices from the meat leak out into the reusable bag, and on the next trip you put vegetables in the bag, the vegetables could pick up the growing bacteria.

All the stores I know of have signs stating that they are donating the five cents to charities.

I shop at Metro because it's close to where I live. Metro claims that the 5 cents they get from each plastic bag goes to a school based charity:confused: ? The price of food at Metro is high as h*** already!

I have a lot of those reusable bags. The only problem is that I live in an apartment with a garbage chute. I now have to buy cheap garbage bags to throw my garbage down the chute. Before this 5 cent bag charge I used to use those metro plastic bags for garbage purposes.
Metro sucks, they are as expensive as loblaws but their quality is inferior. When they have sales on meat they use the cheapest grade of meat available. Not going back to them.....may as well go to nofrills

In Europe we used these bags made of string , like a net. You washed them once in a while. Soon maybe we'll see them at the dollar stores.....do dollar stores charge for the bags too?

You're going to have to buy the plastic bags anyway, so you can throw away your garbage at home.

I bought the reusable bags instead of the plastic bags when they were introduced a week ago. But then I realized I was running shot on plastic bags so I had nowhere to put garbage in my kitchen and office.

Likewise. The Loblaws cashiers where I shop try to stuff everything into the minimum number of bags, but I tell them use more since I need them for garbage. (Before they started charging, they always used an excessive number of bags, putting a few things in each to unnecessarily separate grocery types.) 5 cents per garbage bag is not such a bad deal...

It's a conspiracy started by the GLAD corporation. Forcing me to buy kitchen sized garbage bags instead of using the free ones that grocery stores used to give out. :D

I would gladly go to no frills but I don't own a car. Where I live there are no price choppers, no frills, food basics etc within walking distance. To spend the extra subway tokens to get to these supermarkets would almost economically not make very much sense:) .

I'm also within walking distance of a sobey's but they are expensive as well!

what really pisses me off about the major grocery chains is if they are so concerned about the environment how about paper bags or use the boxes from products.

I usually shop no frills and never buy bags. I always use the boxes provided. call me a cheap skate but Im not spending money on bags when the groceries I purchase already have the plastic bag cost incorporated in the item cost.

oh and try to ask the big chains if they have any boxes to use instead of the plastic bags......

who knew that Id be paying to be environmently friendly. screw that...

Between a rock and a hard place
The way I see it, if my SP can spring for the cost of the cover, so can my grocer.

I never used to know how much I was going to buy until I was at the store.

Now it will be the absolute minimum.

I refuse to pay more any more than absolutely necessary for bags.

And since I'm paying for the bags, I will be the one packing my groceries into them, too. At 5c/bag for a cashier's time, the store loses money if it takes me more than 20 seconds to pack a bag. ($10/hr = $1 / 6 mins = about 16c/min, worth about 3 x 5c bags, or about 20s per bag in labour cost tradeoff) And they can wait because there's no reason for me to rush to pay before I've packed my groceries.

Other times, I will bring my own bags advertising competing stores - but I won't pack any faster, and I will still wait to pay until after I have packed my groceries. Again, no need for me to rush.

This is disgusting.

These stores are just keeping the $$$$$$ total rip off!!!!

The stores LOVE IT. They collect 5 cents profit per bag!!!!

Small stores are even charing 5 cents per bag, total scam! Just pocketing the 5 cents. I was first thinking that maybe the goverment regulates how many bags they use and the money has to get sent back to the goverment like a tax, and that money was used for good things for the enviroment, [ya right!!]

but its a total cash grab for the stores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No frills have been charging 5 cents a bag for quite awhile .Its quite simple if you don't want more plastic added to ozone ,then use your own green friendly bags .Its sad cause garbage that isn't recycable is a serious issue that requires critical attention then just reusable bags .So for goodness sakes we are all ignorant when it comes to garbage .The damage is not going to be fixed by 5 cents a bag ..At least its a dent in saving the planet .If i had it my way there would only be green usable bags in every store .I'm still waiting for Tim hortons to make a recycable cup not just the lid .Mountains will be formed soon .

Fucking stupid system -- I can never guess correctly how many bags I need so I always end up buying too many -- so much for the environment - I'm not loaded but give me a break -- I'm going to bring in old bags to save 25 cents?

So I bought two plastic bags = $0.10. Then they had the nerve to charge me $0.01 GST on top of that - that's 10%!
