I was running an errand. My car said it is 36 degrees outside.

She may be exaggerating a little, but it is too hot for me to be outside.

After the shitty spring,I say get out and enjoy the heat. Before you know it we will be bitching about the cold and snow.
And don't forget, hot weather = bikini season!

This continuous heat is killing my central air.

Questions: What is the self life of a central air unit (mine is now 13 years old)? Also, should I try to create some shade for the unit so that it is not exposed to direct sunlight?

I don't know answer to that. But, when I first came here, I didn't have much cash to buy a good quality air conditioner to replace the pos the previous occupant of the apartment left behind- it worked but it was very weak. I went and bought a large fan and placed it right beside it. It made a huge difference in cooling of the apartment.

You bought a window AC. Actually, I'm thinking of buying a window A/C for one of my rooms as well. I think this heat wave is placing too much stress on central air.
