I can see Matthews pulling a Marner once his contract is done in 2028.

I hated getting to this point, but nothing here changes until he's traded. And after seeing the haul Vancouver got for Hughes, I'm really jealous and want to see this team pivot. Its been a fkn decade, its time to end this experiment.

I kind of want Berube fired. Hopefully the Leafs will lose again tonight, even though, I am a die hard Leafs fan.
Does it really matter at this point? My personal wish would be to address the elephant in the room and trade Matthews and Nylander for players that are actually willing to pay the price in corners, forechecking or basically just showing they give a shit. I've already accepted the rebuild or re-tool coming. Might as well start getting it all done soon, it's inevitable. I refuse to pin this on Berube, even though it's becoming clear his best players aren't really willing to do what it takes to win on his watch. I expect him to get fired soon, and when that happens, everyone's attention will turn to where it belongs - the GM and the players.
Seeing as how I no longer trust Tre either to make these deals, I'm personally in favour of a full housecleaning by Pelley.
The problem is Matthews and Nylander are on no move contracts. Meaning, they can't be traded without their approval.
I think Berube has lost control of the players. They no longer respect Berube, and it's much easier to fire the coach, then to get rid of all the players.
Pelley seems kind of useless, as he's not even a hockey guy.
Another coach who got fired for calling out his players. Remember Berube was the fans and media's choice too.
