Doesn't look like we have a thread yet for the discussion of all things NHL beyond the existing threads for the Leafs and Canadiens specifically, and the new NHL season is now upon us so.....

To start off, who do folks believe will be this year's NHL Rookie of the Year? Top candidates to consider so far include:

Matty Beniers, C, Seattle Kraken
Shane Wright, C, Seattle Kraken
Mason McTavish, LW, Anaheim Ducks
Owen Power, D, Buffalo Sabres
Jake Sanderson, D, Ottawa Senators
Logan Thompson, G, Vegas Golden Knights
Kent Johnson, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets
Juraj Slafkovsky, LW, Montreal Canadiens
Cole Perfetti, C/LW, Winnipeg Jets
Alexander Holtz, RW, New Jersey Devils
Dylan Holloway, C, Edmonton Oilers
Simon Edvinsson, D, Detroit Red Wings
William Eklund, LW, San Jose Sharks
Calen Addison, D, Minnesota Wild
Marko Rossi, C, Minnesota Wild
Jack Quinn, RW, Buffalo Sabres

feel free to add to the list if there is anyone else that merits watching out for at this extremely early point in time

I have a gut feeling it'll be Owen Power. He's had a small taste of the NHL already. Buffalo might be in line for improvement and if he plays well he may get his share of credit for it. Rookie defencemen usually get a bit of extra consideration because their position is considered more difficult.

At least John Tortorella will be entertaining...Carter Hart has got to be a lot better.
I've lost any hope of Hart being a good goalie. Yes the team in front of him sucks but he lets in alot of easy goals and seems to get hurt alot.

Although I'm a Maple Leafs fan, the two nights I'm looking forward to the most are the returns of Gudreau and Tkachuk to Calgary. For the first time in 54 years a Trudeau might not be the most hated person in Alberta.

not always sure...
At least John Tortorella will be entertaining...
I have new respect for Tortorella, after his press conference last week where he explained why he doesn't believe in teaching "systems" or using X's and O's on a whiteboard anymore:
"...especially with today's athlete's with the attention span of an amoeba, and just getting a couple of minutes out of them, and I mean it... you can't give them that."

Mr. Tortorella vs the Millennials. (y) This is gonna be so interesting.
With Paul Maurice not around there's less competition for the best soundbites.

If he has that low of an opinion of his players and treats them accordingly, he'll lose that dressing room in no time.

He's basically telling them that he thinks that they are a bunch of dummies.

But he is entertaining. "Is that what you're saying Brooksie?"

Slafkovsky didn't look too out of place for MTL last night other than the fact he seems to never have two hands on his stick.

Tampa Bay suspends Cole pending an investigation.

Apparently, the allegation could not be substantiated. Good to see that allegations need to be substantiated.

My top 3 contenders for ROY

Matty Beniers. Top line duties with the Kraken he'll see a lot of ice time and PP.
Logan Thompson. Raycroft won ROY as a goalie why can't he?
Mason McTavish. Like Beniers should see a fair amount of ice time, including the team's PP.

I still think Owen Power is another year away from breakout. And I'm not saying this as a Habs hater but I think they will come to regret selecting Slafkovsky over Wright.

I can only hope. Still early.
Hopefully Couturier doesn't miss this season too.
Considering that I have Carter Hart and Tony DeAngelo in one of my fantasy hockey pools I'm happy. But yes I think their season hinges on getting their best player, Couturier, back as soon as possible. Last I checked he's out until Dec/Jan?

Getting Cam Atkinson back would be a great help on D too.
