I have owned two used Acuras and found them to be literally faultless. But, parts were EXPENSIVE. Even the ones which were labeled HONDA! Go figure, LOL

Tough one.

I had a 2014 RDX TECH on a 2 year lease via work. Very nice mid-size SUV. Pluses: 100% reliable for the 65K I drove it. Smooth powerful motor that gets quite good gas mileage, surprisingly fast, well featured, back seats are decent, lots of storage, comfortable ride, decent 4WD system, good seats and ergonomics, great stereo, safe, okay insurance rates. Minuses: expensive scheduled maintenance, requires premium gas, high doors means poor visibility near the car (can't see curbs, it's quite annoying actually), stereo dual screen can be a little complex to the non-tech types, it's an on-road 4WD system - don't expect any off-road prowest. Because the RDX is a sporty SUV, it may have been driven a little hard.

I was looking at a 2018 CRV for my daughter. For the money it's a well equipped, safe, lots of storage, good outward visibility, reliable, well reviewed SUV. I've always looked at the CRV as the "mature" SUV compared to the competition. That said, I know a Honda mechanic well and he suggested to avoid the current CRV and any others in the last 3-4 years - they have been having problems with the motor for years (rings, cylinder scoring and valve leaks) and problems with the new Turbo 4. Other than that he says the rest of the car is near flawless.

Possible alternatives: A great alternative to look at is the Toyota RAV4. The Mazda CX-5 tends to win all the magazine comparison tests. I've talked to many people who own the Nissan Rogue and they all love their SUV, I've not looked at it yet.

I'd echo the caution on the late model CRVs. I have one as a car at my second home (so not huge mileage) and when I took it into Honda about concerns with oil usage they ended up replacing the oil rings. That's a serious repair for a car under 50k miles. The fact that they knew exactly what it was and had a program to replace for free tells me that it's a common issue.

I really doubt that you could find a decently-equipped 2018 CRV under 30K, same as a 2016 RDX.

Both great cars. I would go with the 2018 Honda for the better warranty alone

My experience with Honda is they will admit to, and own a problem, if it's on them. Good for them. I even had regular wear parts replaced out of warranty because they said they tried something new and it didn't work out. Makes for trusting their brand a lot easier.

I'd go for a car a couple years old so somebody else has already already taken the hit driving it off the lot. If you buy from a dealer (of that manufacturer) negotiate in an extra year or two on the warranty.

I have a friend who bought a Honda HRV (slightly smaller than the CRV). I got a lift in it, and it was pretty nice. Roomy, but not overly large. Good mileage according to him. Cheaper than CRV, too.
