I test drove this car for fun 2 weeks ago,
any thoughts?

I know the 2018's are coming in 1.5months with 6yr/72K warranty,
I'm pretty sure same suspension and drives the same as 2017's....

Anyone have a newer VW GTI w/DSG transmission?

It was a fun and exciting car, it seems like its fun to drive everytime you get in.
Tuning ECU seems cheap too and from what I heard, its a night/day difference....

please chime in.

Thanks:pizza:

My ex had a 2014 with the DSG and it was a really fun car to drive. If you're asking specifically about the transmission - initially, I would have preferred the manual, but once I got used to the DSG I really liked it and would buy it again. Shifts are super fast (and it blips perfectly on downshifts) and the programming doesn't intrude too much (unlike eg: Mercedes dual clutch automatics which revert to auto every time you stop - at least the ones I've driven). Even the auto programming is very good so you can simply leave it in S mode and still drive like a maniac.

Anyway, I really like the GTI (and the R) amongst the so called "hot hatch" segment. Since this is TERB I'll use an analogy: The GTI is like an all natural DDG GND in the $250/hour range who is true GFE (with Daphne quality BBBJ CIMSW). The other car I like is the BMW M1 which is the same except in the $350/hour range (but throws in anal). All others in the segment (which I expanded beyond hot hatches to "affordable pocket rockets") deliver great services, but look like street walkers with DD bolt-ons.

I have a friend with a Golf R with the DSG. Performs very well, regular full auto mode just cruise around smoothly, in the sport modes it snaps off amazing shifts and in manual mode it does as asked.

That R (AWD) is a step up from the GTi (fwd)....the GTi i test drove DSG
i could not for the life of me knew why that car was sooo fun to drive.
its quiet on normal, but the S-mode was fun....
I test drove it for 40minutes

I'm driving a 2016 Golf R manual right now, and it is a lot of fun. But not that much of a difference from the GTI really. And I think the Rs have clutch issues as I had a big problem with a dealership and VW when it burned out after 30k. Apparently there is an issue because it uses the GTI clutch which is not suitable for AWD. So I may go back to GTI next time. I know this is a little off topic but thought I'd weigh in on the R.

It's a really fun car and has well deserved cult status. Great handling - corners very flat and hard to tell it's FWD, neutral handling and you can even induce a little trailing throttle oversteer. If you have a bigger budget - you might want to test drive the M1 to compare. Both the GTI (and R) and the M1/M2 are what I call pocket rockets for adults. None of the big wings, garish styling and stuff that appeals to 13 year old boys. Fast, fun but tasteful and not out of place anywhere you want to drive it. The problem for me was that I could not resist driving it like an idiot - so racked up a few tickets whenever I took it out. So it was good to get rid of it (along with my ex-wife). Super fun car though! Tip: If you get one over the winter - get dedicated snows right away and go minus 1 on the rims (make sure they clear the brakes though).

I have a VW family DSG (eg. Audi) and it's great...I drive it like a standard in regular traffic and slip it into automatic in heavy traffic.

I'm really thinking on getting a GTi Autobahn with DSG....
if its not really that much different in handling and fun, the GTi is probably worth it over the "R" version

I agree with those stupid big wings....
I've never had soo much fun test driving a car by myself when I drove that GTi for 40min.
I wouldn't get the standard tranny though, i'm more of the DSG transmission....quick and seamless!

Yes yes, dedicated Snow tires for sure

GTi is most likely a better choice if the "R"version drives very similarly

The R is definitely quicker. Also - the 2018 R will come with more bells and whistles (eg: the digital cockpit from Audi). Either way with the GTI or R - you'll have a blast driving it. Just watch the speedo - because it's a bit of a cop magnet, at least from my experience! I keep hoping that VW will import the Golf R wagon - that would be on my radar for sure.
