Expect to spend 5000 a year in maintenance and repairs. If you know a Audi mechanic, and order parts online, half that amount.

At that kind of mileage, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Offer the guy $1000 and pocket the rest for the next 6 mo. maintenance.

I say it is kind of ordinary looking by today's standards. Why do you think the guy is trying to sell the car?

because it's a 1998 Audi and it will need about $5000.00 work this year

Would't buy. Lots of reliability issues from VW/Audi. Save your money for something else. You may think it's good at first but it'll cost you more than a better car's worth.

I love my Audi but its not cheap to maintain, and i would not buy a used Audi more than 2 years old (ish). When they are tuned and running well they are so solid and fantastic, very few stock cars can touch them in terms of ride quality, durability of finish, and elegance. But at that age and mileage you will be doing a lot of preventive replacement and a lot of full replacement of worn components, at premium shop rates and premium parts rates. And, you may get stranded every now and again. I would never buy so old an Audi.

Nobody here knows, as it all depends on that particular car.

It could be a great deal if the car has been well maintained or it could be a complete waste of money.

I have a 1998 A4 1.8T with 230k and it is in great shape and I wouldn`t even think about selling it so cheap.
And I don`t spend anywhere even remotely close to $5k per year on maintenence and I do all of it at Agincourt Autohaus where I bought the car new.
There are years that I spend around $1k and some around $2k.
If there is one year that you need a clutch, timing belt, and brakes all around, yeah you might hit $5k that year.
$5k per year is absurd.

The Lincoln LS will last you 10 years with very little maintenance cost.
The Audi will cost you an arm and a leg and you'll be sick of it in 2 years.

Neither, I would drop a few thou down and get a brand new Hyundai Elantra sedan... $18,000. with 5 year bumper to bumper. This will save you money rather than dumping 1000s into the 98 Audi.

I have a friend who bought an older Audi a few years ago . . I forgot the model but it cost close to a hundred Gs new. By the time he boughtit it was down to 15Gs. Lovely car, very complicated. He had a German mechanic look after it. I told him to add up what he spent on repairs at the end of the year. He could have been leasing a new car for the money. He has been doing that ever since -- nice Japanese Acura.
Audis are great for the first two years.

2 years? That's pathetic. How come people are so critical of American cars' reliability but are giving German cars a free pass?
