My Iranian friends tell me that middle class and upper class Iranians (not their government) are the most "Westernized" Muslims. But they are in the vast minority.

This is not the first time or the last time something like this is going to happen. I think it was last year when I read a news article in the SUN about another 12 y/o child dying in childbirth somewhere OVER THERE.
UNFORTUNATELY, some mid-eastern customs allow and even encourage what we would consider underage marriage and because of this the girl's family who "gave" her away and even her "husband" will never be charged with anything. Her death will just be considered an "act of god".

I think its a child rape, the culprit should be charged for rape of a 12 year old, very cruel and unacceptable in our part of the world!
Who so ever they are should change their out dated laws, and start practicing a more realistic rules of the day, and such govt. should banned child marriages atleast upto an age of 16 yrs for girls to get married, prior to that it should be declared illegal.
When we hear such sad stories, we totally feel sad and disgusted.

This is not a religious issue. It is an issue of poverty, isolation, and of uneducated, backwards tribesmen living the way 'we' lived 1000 years ago.
Somewhat agree. Yes the more poorer and rural areas are more conservative. But Saudi Arabia is one of the more wealthier nations in the world and yet they have the most extreme laws.

Good one ! It's a lot easier to generalize and pass judgment on other cultures without looking at our own. How old was Jerry Lee Lewis's first bride? He didn't even think anything was wrong because it was not uncommon in the south where until recently, the age of consent was much lower.
Child brides have been available through out the world, in many cases the parents are happy to promote the union to improve their own social standing. How about the tribes in Chile that sacrificed their children ?
Myself, I wonder if the problem with child brides and arranged marriages in general, reflect a lack of respect and recognition of females being equal to men (including equal rights).
