Interestingly, I was recently at the former Don Jail which is now Bridgepoint Health Centre and they conducted a tour of the preserved jail cells and gallows where you can see where the last hangings in Canada took place. I couldn't believe how small the cells were and you can still see the cigarette burns in the wooden floor outside the gallows where they had their last smoke.

Years ago, I was at a tech trade show. Everyone flocked to see the booths with the high tech gadgets and the booths with models and give aways. There was this guy at a lonely booth selling industrial washing machine sized batteries for power back up in case of power failure. He told me he was a retired Mountie. One day in the early 60s he came in to work to find the sergeant at the door holding his Stetson and as people entered they were asked to pick a piece of paper out of the hat. He drew the paper with the X. When he asked what he had won, the sergeant told him he was to be Queens representative at one of the last hangings at the Don Jail. The old Mountie told me it was the worse thing he ever had to witness.
