In the old days in England, sometimes people would be accidentally buried alive. When they exhumed coffins to make room for new people, they would sometimes find scratch marks inside the coffins. They began hiring men to sit in the graveyard throughout the night. There would be a rope/string inside the coffin that would connect to a bell that would ring and alert the guy on the 'graveyard shift' that the person was alive. Hence the term, 'Saved by the bell'.
