Why does this matter? Are you questioning whether or not he is a Canadian. Are you the Canadian eqivalent of a birther? He is a Canadian citizen eligible to be Prime Minister PERIOD There is an old saying Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Questioning someone else's patriotism is perhaps the first refuge of a scoundrel.

Funny, Harper was born, raised and lived in Canada yet his actions and policies are quite American, repulsively Republican............
Of course this is said from a Toronto, left of center perspective, from a Prairie right of center perspective on the other hand.

It matters because if it's an accurate quote ( and that may be the most frustrating part, we just don't know at this point ) then the quote is a very very stupid thing to say.

I read a sun report on this issue and had to do it 4 times before I had some sense of what the reporter was trying to say. It appeared to me me he was taking a short issue/report and tried to fill up a column that needed to be X words long.

I still don't know if he actually voted in the US, but so what. He was a resident in that country, by law(?) was allowed to vote and did so. It's good to know that a resident was concerned enough about what was happening in the country that he was residing. It's better than whining and bitching but not participating in the electoral process. Did he do anything illegal?

The comment about being a Kerry Democrat, what was the alternative? In a country where there is basically 2 choices, it's a choice of the lesser of two evils.

In his voting practices in Britain, again he was legally allowed to do so and took an interest in the country that he resided in. He voted for Labour because he wanted the Conservative bums out. It's someone trying to make a mountain from a molehill.

No, to vote Legally in the United states of America you have to be a resident as per state law ( the state you are residing in ) and be a citizen of the United States of America.

You are needless to say correct, and I believe this was also mentioned up-stream.

Sometimes you just get yourself into a tizzy trying to defend indefensible positions!

Many questioned if he was a U.S. citizen. Feeling the pressure, Ignatieff told the Toronto Star, ”

“I’ve never been a citizen of any other country. Nor was I a green card holder in the United States

A conviction for illegal voting in Massachusetts carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. For each time that he voted.

.......................................

The following was taken from a Massachusetts site:

Who can vote in Massachusetts:

  • You must be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day.
  • You must be a US citizen.
  • You must be a resident of Massachusetts.
http://www.massaflcio.org/register-vote!

In Britain he may be allowed to vote. In the US, not unless he was a citizen, which he denied he ever was. So while you are waxing eloquently about him caring enough to vote instead of bitching, he either lied about being a citizen, or never voted.

Which lie do you prefer?

Why does this matter?
For some people it does not matter.
There are however MANY of us that look at this man, and see someone that has spent the majority of his life, living in other countries, coming into Canada, claiming to be the only political leader 'in touch' with the people that have lived here all of their lives.

Iggy knows that many of us believe his long absence from this country makes him totally un-suitable for any leadership position. (PM, Liberal leader, etc). Therefore, when on tour in Canada, he is trying to convince people like me, that while absent from Canada in body, his heart was here all the time. One of the things he has said to support this, is that he has never voted in any country but Canada, but that turns out to be a lie.

The issue of which countries he has voted in is/was minor, UNTIL HE lied about it, and did that lying in the context of a very important issue. That (willingness to lie) should concern everyone?
