Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. After my hiatus from theater for the past two years, my darling opera professor and I went to see a famous opera - "La traviata" on May 12th. This opera starts from April 23 to May 20, 2022 on stage at the Four Seasons Centre, Toronto.

"La traviata" in English means "The Fallen Woman", which is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, and one of the Verdi’s best-known operas with many recognizable tunes. It is based on La Dame aux camélias, a play by Alexandre Dumas fils adapted from his own 1848 novel. The opera was originally titled Violetta, after the main character. First performance was at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, March 6th,1853.

La traviata tells the story of the tragic love between the courtesan Violetta and the romantic Alfredo Germont. Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society, Alfredo and Violetta's love threatens to shame his family.

Alfredo woos the lovely courtesan Violetta into giving up her madcap life in Paris to be with him alone. However, his father persuades her to give up Alfredo, but not to tell him that the reason is to save his family's honour. Back in Paris, Violetta suffers Alfredo's anger and a fatal attack of tuberculosis. She is reunited with him at last, but it is too late, and she dies in his arms.

Conducted by Music Director Johannes Debus, this is a revival of COC’s 2015 production under director Arin Arbus, which stays true to Verdi’s original vision for the opera, and transports the audience back into the world of Paris’ elite in the mid-1800s.

Egyptian-born soprano Amina Edris in her COC debut was superb as Violetta. Her bel canto is effortless and not excessive, carrying the intricate passages with ease and clarity. She has an engaging presence and is generous with her emotions, especially when portraying Violetta’s vulnerability.

BRAVO!!! COC’s La Traviata is such a fine production with top-notch vocals. Thanks so much for the wonderful evening, my darling opera professor! This opera was fantastic, and I enjoyed it a lot! 🥰
