With two games remaining in their regular season, the 2010-11 Brigham Young Cougars had a record of 27-2, and were ranked #3 in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball.

Before there first game in March, their sophomore starting Center, pictured above, was suspended for the remainder of the season for having had premarital sex with his girlfriend, which violated BYU's Honor Code.

What's his name?
Brandon Davies

Major League Baseball instituted an amateur draft in 1965. Before that, all unsigned players were unrestricted free agents who could negotiate their initial contract with any team.

Which pre-1965 amateur player received the largest signing bonus?

Hints:

He has one World Series championship ring.

His only service time in the American League was during the 'Blue Jays Era', (ie: post 1976).

He played in 100 or more games in each of his first 13 full seasons in the Majors.

He was once the major player in a 2 for 1 trade for a former Most Valuable Player. He and the former MVP were later teammates for less than a third of one season.

At one time, the image of a comic strip character was painted on a seat in the upper deck of the Houston Astrodome, marking the spot where one of his home runs had landed.
The Red Rooster Doug Rader

Nope.

Doug Rader WAS signed prior to the inaugural MLB Draft. His only service time in the AL WAS during the Blue Jays era.

But...

He played in 100 or more games in 9 seasons total, his 2nd through 10th. He does NOT have a World Series ring. He was traded only once, for Larry Hardy and Joe McIntosh. If either of those two was an MVP, it probably wasn't after high school. I don't know a comic strip which had a red rooster. The Red Rooster was the original ring name of wrestler Owen Hart. Rader's signing bonus was $25K, and many players received larger amounts.

On the lower end, 17 year old Bob Feller signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1936 for one dollar and an autographed baseball, and he won 5 games after the All Star Break that season before returning to Van Meter High School in Iowa to finish high school.

You can answer again, but don't assume that the guy we're looking for played FOR the Astros.

If you played organized ball or even serious scrub games in the 60s, 70s and/or 80s there's a good chance you used one. Louisville Sluggers dominated the market. If a team bag contained 6 bats, at least 4 would have the H & B label on them.

This is why three different people posted the correct answer in a space of less than two minutes, earning me two Too Slow points.

What sporting good is manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby Co.?

Answered correctly by funstick.
I protest...lol.... Funstick only beat me by a few seconds as our times are even until the last few seconds when he goes ahead. But Funstick did not use the correct format to answer so at the very least it should be a tie if not a win for me...

No instant replay permitted on response format, so the initial call prevails. My win more valid than Brett Hull's Stanley Cup winning goal. Maybe you should lobby for rule change for the next one.

Your appeal has been upheld.

funstick did not quote the question post, and thus his reply has been deemed to be banter. Let that be a lesson to you all.
