i,m not sure if i posted this song before, but anyway I heard it on Sirios Radio Soultown this morning and i brought back a memory..a little self indulgent probably
Years ago i was a regular with an Escort named Shaneen..the old veterans here may remember her...she knew i loved Soul music from the 60.s and 70,s and on one visit she surprised me with a homemade CD compilation of songs.....incredibly thoughtful on her part...i was familiar with all the songs except this one..it was new to me....thanks Shaneen you were a real sweetheart...hope she is doing well

It's interesting that many of the soul groups of that era had serious choreography worked out for their live performances.

I believe Motown stressed that even more than most labels, eg. The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, etc...

This song is the same age as me. Early Sylvers funk with a mean bassline.

The Art of the DJ - One thing I absolutely loved about 80's hip hop were the DJ cuts. Like this one

"DJ Premier is in Deep Concentration" (1989)

One of the most important songs to hip hop culture. It provided the backbone to so many rap/hip hop records in the early age and Golden Era. 841 to be precise. Its mainly the drum break but also the horns.

"Apache" Incredible Bongo Band (1973)

The only drum break that I can say I like more than this is "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey. Starts at 1:15

Another classic breakbeat record from the early 70's. The drums in the first twenty seconds have been sampled so many times in hip hop and r&b music. But the whole song is a journey that needs to be taken. There's so many great elements to this instrumental.

Rewind back to the summer of 1992. I was working a summer job having to wake up at 6:15 am to get in for 7:00 am. Work till 5:00 pm. Making mad bread for a 19 year old. $9.50/hour x 48 hour weeks for 15 weeks from May-August. On my drive in I would blast this 'Don't Sweat the Technique' cassette from start to finish. Unfortunately, this would be Eric B. & Rakim's last LP together. A run of four excellent releases.

This joint was a hidden gem of the album. It was so smooth, Ra's lyricism and flow was almost untouchable. And those are his sisters with the background vocals too.

"Keep the Beat"

The bass sample

"Blacks & Blues" by Bobbi Humphrey

And the drum sample:

"Joy" by Isaac Hayes

"Tighter than 3 or more heads in a CRX". That's a dope bar except it should have been 5, not 3.

"Tight" Rah Digga
