not part of the Stax stable...my sister is a year and a half younger
Joe Tex's hits were mostly on Dial/Atlantic.

His early releases on the King label were not very successful.

And apparently he had a difficult time with James Brown, who was also on the King label.

Woke up early this morning and decided I'm going to listen to Keith Sweat's first LP 'Make It Last Forever'. One of the great R&B albums of the eighties featuring a young Teddy Riley with co-production. Pretty much every track is quality and at least half of them are what I would consider stellar. The album was certified triple platinum by RIAA by the mid nineties. Four singles were released. The lead single was one of the very first New Jack Swing songs

"I Want Her"

If you listen closely you can hear sounds that were somewhat replicated in Bobby Brown's seminal LP "Don't Be Cruel" the following year. That album wasn't produced by Riley, it was mostly Babyface and L.A. Reid.

The title track "Make It Last Forever" feat. Jacci McGhee. A nice slow/mid tempo jam often a staple on Quiet Storm radio programs.

"Something Just Ain't Right". This is my favorite song from the album. Might even be my favorite Keith Sweat song period. Its a toss up with "Twisted"

Oh my I forgot just how great this tune was. From the PJ's soundtrack (1999). Rafael Saadiq (from Tony! Toni! Tone!) and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest collab.

I like the "I'll Always Love My Mama" Intruders sample...
Indeed. Being a "sample" guy I should have posted that too.

I've heard this song a few times before but never knew who the artist was. What a jam!

So I've posted "So Fine" by Howard Johnson before. That was his only #1 hit. Produced by Kashif. This cut was from the same album, also produced by Kashif

"Say You Wanna" (1982)

So I'm listening to this and I'm like damn I've heard a song that sounds eerily similar to this one. Sure enough its this one

"Arabest" SebestiAn (2011)

I first heard this on a DJ Kaytranada set for the Boiler Room series.

I first heard this joint on a bootleg mixtape I bought back in 1996. Had never heard of the group Bush Babees or the rapper Mos Def at that time. Even though Bush Babees had dropped their debut album in 1994, it just got lost in shuffle since that is one of the very best years of hip hop releases.

"The Love Song"

But I was today years old when I found out who produced this track. Plug One aka Posdnous from the group De La Soul. Are you kidding me? 😲

This compilation has the James Brown All Stars on it. Maceo Parker. Lyn Collins. Marva Whitney. Fred Wesley. And of course Bobby Byrd, who was sorta Brown's right hand man. Byrd had started the group The Flames and then invited Brown to join when he got out of prison. They rebranded as The Famous Flames and scored some hits in the early to mid 1960's.

"I Know You Got Soul" Bobby Byrd (1971) is his signature track

Of course made even more famous when Eric B. & Rakim heavily sampled it for their debut LP 'Paid in Full' (1987)
