Trump is right. A little pimple like Carney trying to puff up his chest and think he can step into the same arena is a joke.
Once the illusion is gone so does the power. The real power of the USA isn't its military, its the reserve currency status. It's how they pay for their military, and all the corporate subsidies. Via debt.
But what happens if an EU nation decides to pay for oil in Euros? It's a pretty simple thing really. The USA could find itself starting to be discarded from financial transactions. Unable to control what goes where, to whom and how much.
Thats the real beginning of the end.
And Canada does have options. We are in NATO, and are signing agreements everywhere. Little ones, big ones, and they all add up. Last year we lessened trade with the USA by 12 billion, but increased with Europe by 15 billion. The China trade deal lessens our trade deficit by 3 billion for this year alone.
A billion here, 2 billion there. And people trust Canada to keep its word. It's not about surpassing the USA, just doing our thing, increasing our economy, making better trade partners, and having that reputation.
Trump is in for a world of domestic hurt. The storm this weekend could be his Katrina, with the FEMA defunding. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing, energy prices could surge due to the damage this storm could cause in West Texas. Half the nation, in Red states mostly, are going to get bad.
While we just do our thing.
Quite simply I think what we can takeaway from Carney is his eloquent indifference to US pressure. That is going to be what carries us.
