Effective immediately, the municipality has suspended its Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program on all city streets.
Today, during a special meeting, councillors supported a motion introduced by Mayor Steven Del Duca to terminate Vaughan’s speed camera program and instead focus its efforts on advancing other traffic-calming measures as well as continuing to explore other approaches to reduce speeding in Community Safety Zones, especially near schools.
The motion also entails making a request to York Region to also suspend its ASE program on Regional roads in Vaughan.
Further, Del Duca’s motion also asks to consider additional traffic-calming measures through the city’s 2026 budget process.

Speed bumps are impractical, slow the traffic down way too much, and create snow plowing problems ok.
So putting a speed in a 40 km/h school zone is a lot different than putting it in a 50 km/h zone like Shepard East between Mills and Leslie.
Use drones to take out those individuals that are vandalizing the camera, shot them dead !

If people are driving 65km in 40km zone, maybe the problem is not the people but the low speed limit? Make the speed limit the real one, e.g., look at the average speed at which people drive and add 10% to it, repeat the process until most people will drive UNDER the speed limit (and not 20% above it) simply because they find it to be the optimal speed, and only then install the cameras at that optimal speed limit. Look at highways: 100km speed limit is ridiculous: almost noone drives below 120, and many drive around 130. Make it 140 limit - people will continue to drive at the optimal speed of 130. And then feel free to ticket anyone, even 1km above the speed limit. For school zones: install the pedestrian light cameras, it will surely make it safe for everyone. And do not disembark school buses on the sides of major roads.
Always some entitled individuals will want to see increased speed limits.
The Darwinism of the ever increasing grid lock and perpetual road improvements in the GTA is causing speeds to decrease anyway and if the speed limit was increased to 140km/h, there would be very few opportunities to even hit that speed and even less to cruise for sustained periods of time, maybe 1am to 4 am lol.
Then there is the insurance companies that may start requiring mandatory monitoring of “driving styles” if speed limits are jacked up and safety cameras are taking down which would result in greater insurance payouts due to increased accidents.
The actuaries have already done calculations for the insurance industry.
Increasing AI road monitoring will come in despite what populist Ford says.
The main word in "speed limit" is the "limit". It should be set so that most people would prefer to drive BELOW the speed limit, not AT the speed limit, and it will only prevent a few crazy ones from going at crazy speeds. As long as most people drive at safe speeds (and not at the speed limit), the number of accidents will not increase. In a current situation where the speed limit means the "expected speed" (am, in fact, everyone usually drives 20% above it), the speed limit is a risk factor itself as people will try to drive at it regardless of the road condition. Instead, with high speed limits people will soon learn their own preferred and safe speed, and, in case of traffic, will just go with the flow.

Ontario police chiefs in favour of speed cameras, contrary to Ford’s push to axe them

Ontario’s chiefs of police are coming out strongly in favour of speed cameras, after Premier Doug Ford threatened to get rid of them provincewide.
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police said in a statement Thursday that automated speed enforcement cameras are effective in reducing speeding and freeing up police resources to focus on other public safety priorities.
“Employing ASE tools has been proven to reduce speeding, change driver behaviour, and make our roads safer for everyone — drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and especially children and other vulnerable road users,” the OACP wrote.
“These tools are especially deployed in school zones and community safety zones, where slowing down saves lives and prevents serious injuries.”
The association representing Ontario’s municipalities has also urged Ford to reconsider his plan to get rid of the cameras, saying it will put pedestrians at risk.
A July study from SickKids and Toronto Metropolitan University found the cameras reduced speeding by 45 per cent in Toronto.
The chiefs of police said they do not view the cameras as a revenue tool, but as a traffic safety tool to be used alongside other road safety measures.
“(Their) purpose is deterrence and prevention — helping to change driver behaviour and reduce collisions,” the chiefs wrote.
