Cost Effectiveness of Owning an Espresso Machine?

I'm not a big coffee drinker but I do like me a nice strong espresso every once in a while.

It's almost 9 years since I noticed a machine at Costco for $1,000. Do I want to spend a grand on something that I may not use much? Can I justify it? It was a deLonghi. Not a big name in the espresso world but a reputable company. I know that the top machines like Gaggia and others can easily go for $4-5K and even more. I'm a self indulgent person and don't like to say no to myself. I made the purchase.

Now to see if I made a wise purchase. Being anal retentive, I decided that I would count how many shots I made and the resultant price per shot for the machine.

So here I am since April of 2017 counting shot by shot. I am closing in on 2,000 shots in 9 years, approx. 200 shots per year. Once I reach that mark, I'll be at 50 cents per shot for the machine. Factoring in the coffee itself is another matter seeing as the price changes. Hint: it hasn't come down. I believe it was $9 for a 1kg bag back then and it is now at $27. I was getting 90-100 shots per bag so 10 cents a shot initially and now 25-30 cents/shot for the beans. I'd have had to factor in when those price changes were and how many I bought at each price point to get an accurate number. Too much work, sorry.

So, I'm thinking that each shot has cost me about 60-65 cents all in. What does Starbucks charge for a shot. I never ever go into one. I usually make 3 or 4 shots to make a cup of espresso.

On a side not, aside from the financials there's 2 other uses I have found for the espresso.

1) I concocted my own smoothie. Banana, espresso, peanut butter smoothie blended in with crushed ice, some agave syrup, a dash of vanilla and a bit of milk. I can have one at breakfast or lunchtime and it'll hold me for about 3 hours.

2) A sip of espresso is a great chaser following a shot of Canadian whiskey.

You can make the absolute best expresso with a 175$ Breville Roma machine. The secret is investing in a 20$ grinder. Grinding fresh every day.

Previous to the deLonghi I had a basic Breville. I had trouble with the hole in the pod repeatedly getting clogged even though I kept sticking that little pin through it. This one is more convenient and versatile. I'm happy with the purchase. I feel that I'm getting my mondey's worth.

Sub $1500The industry dupes you into spending money on the flashy machine. At that price point, Grinder, beans and water are the greatest determinants of quality given a machine (or a makers) ability to pull a consistent shot.

once you are spending considerable money, the machine increases in importance . Commercial grade components are important if there is real volume of use.

Phillips took over Seaco machines and Phillips has this fully automatic machine for while below $1,000 just a great little machine
I think the higher end machines are beautiful and making a coffee is an art with those machines but if you’re looking for coffee and value and great taste go with the Phillips

I'd rather walk into Tim Hortons and just buy a coffee about 2 or 3 times a week. Gives me a chance to flirt with a hot Indian or Philly lady and tell them their ESL is like 90% and they smile and giggle. I think one wants to blow me. She can meet me out back while I'm sipping away.
What's the cost?

I have a coffee machine that grinds too per serving. It certainly pays for itself and has saved me in terms of coffee money. Then again, I’m definitely down with what I blow in this hobby.

Well, maybe the coffee savings help you to pay for a session or 2 per year.

Or another possibly appropriate saying would be "penny wise, pound foolish".

If you got a lot of money, then a grand is not much. Otherwise just go get a double espresso in one of the many shops. Good to see you call it with the correct name , many call it Expresso LOL

You can also save a lot of money if you do not have to buy Nespresso pods and use your expresso machine to make Americano. The quality of the beans make a big difference. An inexpensive coffee scale from Amazon also makes a big difference in consistency.

That's where they make the money. Sell the machine for cheap but then you're locked into buying (vastly overpriced) pods.

I've had a $1,000 Delonghi espresso machine for years and absolutely love it. Totally worth it. BTW, the only type of coffee grinder you should get for espresso are burr grinders. More expensive than the blade grinders ($100 vs $30) but there is no comparison. You would notice the difference in a taste test.

I have 29 boxes of nespresso I can sell you for five dollars each. My machine broke for the third time and I’m not going through the hassle again with that company
