Right. Get killed over a purse...

When I worked for a chain of stores, management's instructions were, in case of a robbery attempt by a person with a weapon, give the cash or whatever to the assailant.

We didn't want any employee to be seriously injured or killed trying to protect our assets.

Completely different scenarios, her first split second instinct is to protect her belongings, you had training. I don't think anyone just gives up their stuff just from instinct, the first few seconds a person doesn't even realize what's happening, it's just a blur.

I also don't like to play the internet tough guy roll telling everyone how I would have handled it. But there's no way she doesn't look at him differently now. He looked so feminine in his reaction.

Seriously? Why wouldn't the chick just give up the pack? Is she that stupid?

Why is it the expectation that as a man we should bare the brunt of violence?
In all fairness, the robber didn't even give her time to remove the bag. He jumped out of nowhere attacking her.

So moving around and making it more difficult for the thief to steal the bag is a better option? That guy was not interested in stabbing her. He was about the bag. If he was about stabbing her she would have been dead.

I get it that it was a surprise but if you are going to travel this shit may happen and you should prepare for such circumstances.

How do you know he's not a wannabe Alpha male showing his real cowardness once confronted by a more dangerous male?

Imagine the balls on that thief to attack in broad daylight in a crowded street. His buddies jumped in to protect him from the "tough Soy boys," who jumped in with fists flying.

Many years ago, when I lived in Montreal, a well-respected lawyer, who I knew, heard a fight or mugging going on in a back alley in downtown Montreal.

He went into the alley to try to break it up.

He came out in a body bag, leaving a widow and 2 young children.

Self-defense when you or your loved ones are directly attacked is one thing.

But being a hero for no reason, or even to protect your watch and wallet, or your wife's purse, is a horse of a different stable...

There is a reasonable chance all her travel documents are in the bag.
That is a valid reason to be concerned about the bag.

Not keeping travel documents very close to your person, and not in a purse tucked in the top of another bag is just dumb to me.
But hey, you do your thing.

When I was flying between Australia and Canada several times while working there and around Oz, atm card and passport and airline tickets lived in a pouch in a harness that went over one shoulder and around body.
And was kept under my buttoned up shirt.
This was before the age of people wanting to rob you just to steal your phone.

La la land
The thief looked stoned, but could have been acting.
He had back up.
The locals were not having it.
- Maybe the BF called for help?
Maybe they just met during the trip and decide to travel together for a while I have seen this in Hostels.
Other fights broke out behind them.
The two red cars in the background - 2 stories passenger comes out to help ; door of car hits the other car
She - victim - acted smart by throwing the purse ? inside the glass interior and went in.

Did I miss anything?
Lesson learned as @Ponderling mentioned you have to know how to hide things. She should have worn a hat to hide her colour hair. Dress like the locals not a tourist.

Not in this case, but a famous female game is "Let's you and him fight!", while they stand back and watch the fun...
