The Death of the Strip Clubs- End of an Era?

Today I went out to check on the state of downtown Toronto’s adult entertainment scene — because I’ve been hearing whispers that two, maybe even three of the city’s iconic strip clubs are about to disappear. I start my story walking empty-hearted, staring through the glass windows of what was once Hudson’s Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue. There’s something eerie about these empty spaces — like ghosts of luxury. People still stop and stare, almost in disbelief, as if the city’s pulse has quietly faded from this corner. My first stop: Zanzibar. I haven’t been down here in a while, and I was floored by how quickly the new development is rising — it looks like the building is eating the strip, inch by inch. Of course, the question hits me immediately: What happens to the dancers, the staff, the community that thrived here? Not everyone wants to, or even can, move online. Many people love the energy of the club, the lights, the conversations, the human connection. So what happens when all of that disappears? It makes me wonder — how many condos can we really fit downtown? Will there be any businesses left? Or just warehouses, ghost kitchens, and towers filled with people who never meet their neighbors? After a late lunch, I keep walking — trying to shake that feeling of loss that comes when a city you love starts to feel unfamiliar. My next stop is Fillmore’s, and for a moment, I exhale. It’s still standing. I circle the block and get a few shots, and after chatting with someone nearby, I learn they have about a year left before major construction begins. It hits me then — I’m watching a piece of Toronto history quietly fade. In just a few years, there might not be a single strip club left downtown. I finish my walk near Yonge Street, standing under the iconic Brass Rail sign. Can you imagine this area without it? The neon lights, the laughter spilling out at midnight, the people just being people? Maybe this is the end of an era. But maybe, just maybe, it’s also a chance for something new — encouraging more organic ways to connect, and for the city to rediscover its soul.

The last time I went to a strip club was 2013.
That is also when I discovered escorts.
Strip clubs while it may cater to a particular set of clients and some people may like them, are objectively, a total waste of money.
It costs more to get a HJ at a strip club for 15 mins, than to book a provider for FS for an hour.
There are also hygiene issues at strip clubs.
Then you'd have to put up with the door guy, the door free, everyone expecting tips including waitresses, drink minimums etc.,
The entire thing is one big hustle to rinse your wallet.
So why would I bother with that game when I can book sexy time with ladies so easily, especially in these times with affordability issues?

Hamilton lost all of its strip clubs. The last one closed in 2019.
Edmonton at one time had 29 I think in 80'-90's. I was there in 2005 I think and it only had two.

Someone told me the Feds Gov't wants them all closed and same with dance clubs. How many of those disappeared?

Read the reviews of Zanzibar:

"Stay away, the girls would swindle you. It is $20 for one time fee for private then $20 per song but after 10 minutes, they asked for $120."

"I wouldn’t even recommend this establishment to my worst enemies. I was here not too long ago with a buddy of mine and we were literally forced to pay 2000 dollars for a 20 minute lap dance. "

"This place is a TOTAL SCAM. DO NOT GO THERE. A friend of mine was charged over 1000$ for a 20 minute private dance and 2 drinks. "

Maybe there's a reason strip clubs are disappearing.

I stopped going to strip clubs when I realized that there was no longer any chance that the stripper was going to do me for free...it's loserville. Previously, as a travelling rock musician we worked the same bars and sometimes shared adjacent accommodations. Fun was had!

Only a small percentage of women are '$7 per minute good looking', and most of them don't work in strip clubs.

Back in the day, the best talent often worked in strip clubs only in November and early December. Hot civvies would peel for a couple of weeks to pay for Christmas or their winter vacation. It was not uncommon for them to do this in a city where they didn't live; for the same reason why some women take solo vacations in the Caribbean when they have a craving for 'the purple crayon ' - they don't want anyone they know to know.

I am surprised any still exist, last time I was in one was when dances were $2 each, figured out then that pay for watching had zero value since I could rent great porn for the same cost for a day. Never understood why anyone would dump money into a club. I am pretty confident they will all go away, a couple may stay if there is a tourist market, they are no longer a thing, they are not price competitive when a handfull of dances are the same (or more) than an hour with a great SP.

I honestly do not identify with the memories of warmth and human connection that Samantha is describing. My memories are of sitting in a worn out armchair in the VIP, immersed in the smell of stale beer and semen, while getting hustled on the dance count.

I don’t care if all of these places close but I imagine at least some of them will always scrape along one way or another.

There was one girl I remember from back in the day, who started sweating so profusely like she was running on a treadmill at 10mph.
And she was trying to rub her sweaty boobs on my face and I was trying to duck and it made me laugh.
I eventually had to tell her to stop and got the heck out of there back home to take a shower. lmfao.

There was a time when I used to "live" in strip clubs on weekends. Made good friends with many of the dancers as well as the bartenders and waitresses. That was my way to indulge at looking at the many strippers as they stripped and bonus points if they could actually dance and put on a 3-song show. Most couldn't but there were always a few that could and often. including the other strippers, would watch their entire stage show. But with time that ended and most girls just put in their stage time and are happy to get it done. Over the years I just went less often and rarely go anymore and replaced all of that with seeing SPs instead. Strip clubs are slowly dying and IMO that would be sad but in this day and age it doesn't surprise me.

As I recall there were two or maybe three clubs on Kipling between Qway and 6 points.
Back when this was blue class manufacturing and Hydros big place.

Now it is warehousing, container farms and Qway is turning over to retail.
It was a sad day when Sizzling Jaks, the 24 hour restaurant on The Qway near Kipling closed.

If your old enough to remember ( and partisapate ) when strip joints were in there glory, there were no massage spa's, online was a thing of the future. Strip joint was the thing, I also remember when Young St. Was wild with everything from paint a girl, nude dancing and strip joints until the big clean up

now a days The Queensway between Royal York and Kipling is full of Condos, on both sides...for most of my life i,ve been a South Etobicoke guy.....seen all the changes over the years and been to all those Strip Joints from years past, that no longer exist......
Jerry,s Place
The Kipling Steakhouse
I Donknows..an outside mall now
The Eastwood Tavern on Lakeshore at Browns Line..long gone
A place on Evans just east of Browns Line..forgot the name..a pure dump lol..a couple of the strippers "moonlighted" as street walkers on the Lakeshore motel strip, again now the site of tall Condos
The infamous House of Lancaster..Queensway and Royal York..the site is now a Condo
And there was a place on Queensway a mile or so east of The East Mall on the south side..forgot the name..now is a Youth drop in center i think

I think it'd be a shame if they died out completely. I had some good times in my 20s, enjoying the atmosphere, watching the stage dances, and taking a particular few to the VIP.

I've frequented them less and less over time for exactly one reason: the dancers' attitudes going downhill. There are still gems, but far more likely you'll get a dancer who gives attitude if you turn her down, even if you potentially want to take her to the VIP later. Many are far too pushy with a menu, and will go completely cold if you refuse. A bunch of them will try to cheat you, by starting mid song, or exaggerating song count, or say after-the-fact that the menu price wasn't all inclusive. All these add up to a bad experience. These bad experiences have always existed, but the ratio of bad experiences to good experiences has exploded since the '00s.

Back when I was new to strip clubs, I'd generally have a good experience with new dancers maybe 50% of the time. Now it's 10% of the time. If I'm averaging $200 with each dancer, that's effectively $1800 to leave disappointed. And once I stopped going frequently, I lost track of my tried and tested regulars, so I couldn't even hedge with them.

Fact is, there's way better value out there. The only thing strip clubs had going for them is the vibe. And if the vibe is killed by bad dancer attitudes...what do they have left?
