The company announced in late 2023 that it would retool the plant for Jeep Compass production. But in February, shortly after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs against foreign autos, Stellantis paused that work, while providing assurances that it still planned to bring the factory online.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday he spoke with the automaker to emphasize his “disappointment” with its plan. The provincial government had promised as much as C$132 million ($94 million) to help the plant.

“No provincial funding has flowed to Stellantis for its Brampton project. Stellantis has a duty to live up to their promise to Brampton autoworkers and continue with their allocation in Brampton,” Ford said in a social media post.
