Almost all of them were filmed in Extremadura Spain...a little chunk of the Sahara in mainland Europe. Spain became dirt poor under Generalissimo Franco, the regime wa desperate for investment. Italians love Westerns, directors saw that they could make them in Spain at 1/4 of the cost of filming in Italy.
