I ordered a "Regular Coffee" at a non big name coffee place in the Eaton Center. I then walked down to the other end of mall before I took a sip, to my dismay, it was black, no milk/cream and sugar, So I walked back , pissed off and told the girl that I ordered a reg.coffee and that it was black.
Her response- "Regular is black" , I then told her otherwise , and asked for cream and sugar to be put in. and that if i wanted it black , I would have asked for black.. how ignorant of her to be working at a coffee shop!

I miss the simpler days when a coffee was a coffee. Man I’m old.

But usually they ask if we want milk or sugar in it when ordering. Regular coffee is just "drip coffee", as opposed to espresso, nothing about what you put in it. And good chance they don't put cream and sugar in my regular coffee by default, I'd throw the coffee away.

Tim Hortons, other cofffee shops in toronto (Except for Starbucks, where they ask you if you need room for cream and sugar, where you add those yourself) I've been to, regular coffee means milk/cream with sugar, I've lived in T.O. for 60 years!!!

Yes regular means milk and sugar. Her only question should have been milk or cream. To avoid that confusion I just ask for my coffee with one milk. You need to realize that many of the people working in these shops are untrained and/or simply don't give a shit about doing their job well.

What do you ask if you want not-an-espresso than? To me it's a regular coffee. A drip coffee. It's never been what we put in it to me. Also, I never go to Tim Horton. That girl is not wrong, she just doesn't live in your own bubble.

Giselle and I are on the same page here. I’ve been ordering coffee for more decades than I care to admit, and regular coffee means black coffee. You want other stuff? you ask for it.

Please tell me where regular means milk and sugar? so I can be prepared to specify black.

You should have told her "when you ASSUME you make an ass of U and ME" or whatever the expression is. Seeing as this thread is catching fire. I always ask for cream on the side because if I let them do it they turn it into a muddy milkshake. A&W sometimes refuse to let me add my own cream. They insist on doing it themselves even if I ask them just to put it into a small container so's I can do it myself.

And that's where "Regular coffee" got it's start was at Timmies. Thru their advertising campaigns a "Regular Coffee" was 1 cream/milk with 1 sugar and eventually the double/ double also started because of Timmies. Often it's best to say 1 coffee, black if you want nothing in it.

Now keep in mind, back then if you asked for an “espresso” or “americano” you’d get a puzzled look and be accused of being some kind of foreigner, and if you asked for a Frappuccino, you probably would have been forcibly ejected. There would have been no need to specify the method by which the coffee was made, since there was only “regular” coffee available, and that was made in a large coffee percolator. A coffee was a coffee, and since many people took milk/ cream and sugar, the regular term came to refer to the things you add to a (regular) coffee, ie how most people took their coffee

But, alas, times have changed. There are umpteen different types of “coffee” and “regular” in most coffee places is going to refer to drip coffee, and nothing made in an espresso machine, cold brew or nitro cold brew…. Etc.

To the OP, gotta change with the times. And if something as minor as this causes you to be pissed off, you will drive yourself to an early heart attack from unnecessary stress. I feel bad for the barista you chewed out, but on the other hand she will have a hilarious story to tell her friends about the crazy old “male Karen” guy that got pissed off that she didn’t put cream and sugar in a “regular” coffee.

Unfortunately, everyone is right here. Regular does mean 1 cream/1 sugar in almost every coffee shop in Ontario specifically because of Tim Hortons influence. It also is means Medium sized coffee in some places, drip coffee in others, and black coffee in others still.

Just be clear in what you want, with the proper amount of additives and you're good. Also, chill.

Sorry, regular coffee is black coffee. Unless you specify sugar or milk, it will be black.
