NHL to implement playoff salary cap this season

The teams will simply come up with new chicanery to circumvent the salary cap. As it stands with the salary cap projected to go through the roof over the next four years, I think the league will see teams who will be able to spend to the max and teams who have a self imposed internal cap that they won't go over. Essentially a return to the days before the salary cap

Same for Vegas.
Leafs could have pulled that move with Matthews but chose not to.
Instead they give up a boatload for plugs to retain salary.

I think one of the arguments was the players technically don't earn their salary in the playoffs, only regular season.
