If traveling to US, expect phone and laptops to be searched

Neither have I, but it is their right to search it.
It's not about the right. It's that they are using it to intimidate. A big target was USA immigration lawyers coming home. And asking random people if they like the President has never been a thing. So it's not a process thing by a bureaucrat. It's Trump being an asshole and authoritarian.

Since the new border apps have come out you can bypass lines anyway. Going to the USA before all this bullshit was less than 5 minutes through the line at Pearson customs. Coming home the same. And Britain as well.

I wonder if it's worth it.
I used to have all the quick passes for Canada and US and the US TSA quick pass etc . Now I don't bother. I don't cross into the US much anymore and don't plan to until Trumpism is dead and flushed in the US. If I wanted to be put at risk by a lawless gestapo, I'd travel to Mexico where the weather is nicer and everything is less expensive. But I don't go to Mexico. Or Dubai for that matter.

I have been arrested twice in Canada, both times charges withdrawn on first appearance. (Actually 3x if you count when I was 16 and got an Absolute Discharge after pleading guilty to a spontaneous property crime- pre-YOA) Customs asked me about them once during an arrival on a private flight. I explained and they let me through... no problem. I have other historical background that likely trumps just about any internet porn or hobbying dirt that can be dug up so I always breeze through Customs anywhere.

If I was buying a condo like @Phil C. McNasty , I'd apply for and get my Nexus card BEFORE I bought the condo. Hate to buy something then get flagged and banned. Nexus means that they know your secrets and you have been cleared anyways.

Canadian customs are going through people's phones just as much as US customs are from what I hear.

Mexico has great customs. Super fast electronic, give you a receipt for 180 days on the spot. But you do have to keep it.

Mexico city is a great place to visit. Lots of fantastic museums and art galleries(Mexico an artists hub). The pyramids outside if town are unbelievable. Great restaurants too. Airbnb is cheap. Uber cheaper and good drivers(you do not want to drive there!)

I highly recommend you give it a shot for a week.

Better educate yourself. I'm sure you won't so I'll give you a head start.
I'm sure most if not all countries have the same laws.

Yes, US border agents can legally search your phone and other electronic devices at the border without needing a warrant or probable cause. This right extends to both citizens and non-citizens. While you can refuse to provide your password, doing so could lead to further scrutiny, detention, or even denial of entry.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Broad Search Powers:
U.S. border agents have broad authority to inspect electronic devices at the border, including searching the contents of your phone and requesting passwords.

  • No Warrant or Probable Cause Needed:
Unlike一般的 searches, border agents don't need a warrant or even a reason to suspect wrongdoing to search your phone.

    • Consequences of Refusal:
While you can refuse to provide your password or unlock your phone, doing so could result in further questioning, detention, or even being denied entry into the country.
    • Canadian Perspective:
The Canadian government has also warned travelers about the increased scrutiny and search powers of U.S. border agents.
    • Protecting Your Privacy:
If you are concerned about your privacy, consider taking steps like putting your phone on airplane mode before approaching the border, or using a "burner phone" with limited personal information.
I know the laws, its the general populace that's the issue, they let it happen

it isn't their right they just made up a law that says they can - it violates your right to privacy but the lame bozos are ok with it so it stands. Rules for thee because thou protest not.
You say you know the law,but your this post says otherwise.

La la land
My cell got searched in Australia 3 years before Covid. I took the cell for two reasons. Phone which I found they had pay as you go really cheap and some photo. At the time I had a point and shoot camera, great camera it died. An yes two customs men looked at the phone like there is no tomorrow. Since I wasn't into cell phones back then it was to clean. I had plenty of paper work for my travel and diary so after 2 hours they let me pass. Like they pulled my socks apart.

I was the only dark skin guy on the plane.
Aussie are not prepare to fly like CDn or US.

If you are making a connecting flight and need to get off the plane first to catch you next flight which 20 minutes departure after you land, don't you think you ask the stewards to let you off first.?
5 people needed to do that - like how dumb are you.

My worry about Mexico is probably misplaced. I worry that everything is fine, until it isn't. Mexico is ultimately, a place without true or fair legal systems.

But I think I'm going to live dangerously and give it a visit. I love Mexican food and women. I dated a couple of girls from Veracruz that were very tall and slender. So sexy! One was a stripper and was the sweetest girl. And so fucking hot! 😵

One incident 6 years ago with a dude probably suspected of drug connections? I think there was something more going on here. It's not systemic nor related to who is in office btw. Nor connected to a trade dispute.

I think border patrol was probably wrong. And fucking with any lawyer will get you this type of publicity. But again, it's not about politics.

Last trip we did a few places to visit friends living there. The central park in Mexico city alone would take days with a fantastic museum odmf modern art and the main castle museum highlights. Airbnb in the 100 and change CAD for the night.

Just be prepared for traffic and to not be in a rush.

Well... I go to the US for biz a few times per year and at my last land crossing... wait for it everyone... they were so fucking NICE! I have never had my phone / laptop checked. EVER!
They we're hospitable. They were joking around. The border states are HURTING because Canadians aren't visiting and it shows. Nothing political here... just another perspective for balance.

It's not that every birder guard is doing it. It's that there is no consistency in it. For every story like yours, I have friends who have been stopped, asked odd questions about Trump. In many cases they are visible minorities.

I too have never in the past had an issue. But that is just, like yours anecdotal.
