Here's the thing: Newsom is going to fight. He ain't bring a knife to a gun fight. He knows that his state is the largest in the country, and is an economic driver that generates $4T in GDP. Trump is picking fights with democracy, and Newsom is going to curb stomp him. These tweets are poking Trump in his fat belly, and Fox and the right-wing media sphere cannot see the hypocrisy or irony about criticizing them. It is actually brilliant, because the media has allowed Trump to normalize his unhinged rants. And, to call out Newsom...well, it just doesn't work.
And, remember, Trump is trying to punish the UC university system. However, unlike Harvard or Colombia, they are backed by a $4T state that will bitch slap the DOJ for overstepping. I have a buddy who works in the legal department at one of the UC schools, and while he is not involved in the potential litigation with Trump, he knows they have an army of lawyers (plus the faculty of three law schools) to fight hard.
