Imho Canada Post mail processing and delivery are essential services.

Strikes by Canada Post workers should be illegal. Their labor disputes should be settled via binding arbitration.

Too many people and small businesses get hurt when they strike.

This thinking is why they're in the trouble they are. When gov't imposes binding arbitration on them, both parties (employer and union) avoid making the difficult but necessary changes that are needed.

Binding arbitration is fine if the only issue is money. Generally the union gets slightly more than they would have otherwise been able to negotiate but the employer also avoids a strike.

But when the very fabric of your business changes (i.e., letter delivery), you need very real changes and interest arb would get you that.

That's why the industrial report that just came out advises the gov't to stay out of any strike and let it play out. Which will probably mean the union will be forced to agree to things they otherwise wouldn't. Canada Post could cave instead, but at this point they have nothing to lose. Without change they're dead anyways.

The problem is that there is no affordable acceptable substitute for Canada Post. Waiting out an extended strike would be disastrous for many individuals and small businesses.

Check out the costs of alternatives, such as FedEx and UPS. How would the average person or small business who has to mail small items, or mail payments because they don't have internet access or knowledge, afford the extreme cost differences.

What about people who haven't or can't set up direct deposit with the CRA or Service Canada do if they are expecting monthly CPP, OAS, GIS cheques, etc.

It was estimated that the last strike cost Canadian small businesses $1 billion.

Even as an experienced computer user who pays most of my bills on-line, there are some people I deal with who require physical cheques, which would be very expensive to send by courier.

Binding arbitration should include a plan to implement whatever changes are required at Canada Post to minimize operating costs for Canada Post, while still ensuring at least a basic acceptable level of service.

😭 I was literally just talking about doing camming again TODAY! I stopped after the last strike. It took 2 months to get paid when I cashed out before the strike.

Looks like we'll have another Canada Post strike starting this friday

In January, it received a $1.034-billion loan from the federal government to help cover operations this year. In its latest annual report, Canada Post said that “at least $1-billion will also be needed in 2026 and each year afterward to maintain operations and meet our employee obligations.”4 days ago

They need to significantly reduce the frequency of their home delivery services for standard regular mail. (business service is a different matter)

Not get rid of home delivery, but significantly lower their frequency. There is no need for somebody to deliver mail to our community mail box every single day. Once a week would work. There is nothing coming in my mail that can't be delivered on a weekly basis,

Yeah. Maybe twice a week. But not sure how to handle remote people who get medicine in the mail.

Canada post is insolvent. Unfortunately CUPW is trying to get blood from a stone. There is no way Canada Post can meet their demands without going further in the hole and eventually having to lay off massive numbers. Mail service is necessary but it can’t break even.

CUPW is retarded. They are in denial of present day reality. They are going to screw the workers now by punishing seniors and small businesses, who will be forced to find alternate delivery methods. thus reducing revenues even more and lays offs must ensue. They should just shut it down and find a new plan, like 2 days a week lettermail delivery. Allow part timers to deliver parcels on weekends

In just a few short years this organization has gone from losing $100 million to losing almost a billion. This despite increased revenue believe it or not. Maybe they should worry less about ESG and DEI and more about gaining efficiencies and finding new markets.

Given it takes a week to send a simple regular size envelope from Toronto to Montreal, and even a bit longer to Winnipeg, I see absolutely no reason that more than twice a week lettermail home delivery is necessary. And given the small quantity of mail most individual people receive at their residences, I seriously doubt that there would be any mail slot, apartment box, or community box overflow.

It may be a different story for small businesses...
