Depending where you put the comma can change meaning

Moses asked God who he was and God said

"I am, that I am." This means God is what he is

"I am that, I am." This means God is everything as God is saying I am that and that and that etc

That that is, is that. That is not, is not. Is that it? It is.

Meaning :

That which exists, exists,
things that exist, do exist

That which does not exist,
does not exist.

Is that all there is to say,
It is.

The past perfect tense describes actions completed before another past event.

John had had a had that had had a had that had had my approval

kind of makes sense and is as far I can go with it

TODAY'S SPECIAL: HAMANDEGGS.

That very "special" ad should have put more space between the special ham and "and" and "and " and the special eggs special ; but then this very special ad would not be as special without the special "and" because it would be just another special about a special that is not special as there is nothing special about a special ham and eggs special.

I believe it is better to say

That, that is, is. That, that is not, is not. Is that it? It is.

But in your defence you are really saying

That that is, is that. That is not that, is not that. Is that it? It is.

The "that"s I added can be assumed

But , I believe my version is better so you are awarded

and that is that

Had' is the past form as well as the past participle of 'have'.

I had (past tense of have) a bad day.

the past perfect tense has this form:

Subject + had + past participle of verb

If two non-consecutive events happened in the past, this tense is used to show the first event.

By the time we arrived, the party had begun.

Consider this sentence:

I had eaten my breakfast.

This is the past perfect form with the verb eat. This uses the past participle ( 3rd form) of the verb.

Now, just substitute the verb eat with have.

I had had my breakfast.

WTF are the rules for that ? Punctuation changes everything

John had had a "had" that had had a "had" that had had my approval

I think it now means I had approved of the had that was had by a had had that had Johns approval , but I am not certain

The entire point of the thread (and that post) was "how do you punctuate this so it means what it is supposed to mean"?

And yes, that rules may change over time might make it not always obvious what punctuation is correct in current usage.

Yes.

Eats, shoots & leaves.

Eats shoots and leaves.
The ambiguity of a sentence fragment. "eats" is a verb, while "shoots" and "leaves" are the verb's objects: a panda's diet consists of shoots and leaves. However, the erroneous introduction of the comma gives the mistaken impression that the sentence fragment comprises three verbs listing in sequence the panda's characteristic conduct: it eats, then it shoots, and finally it leaves.
