Trump set Zelensky up to be disrespected and humiliated to pay him back for a past perceived slight. Before Trump and Vance attacked Zelensky like a couple of hyenas. Zelensky was asked by a reporter disrespectfully why he was not wearing a suit. It looks to me like the reporter was planted with a question to ask Zelensky possibly the reporter would receive special privileges in the future for his cooperation. Zelensky was asked by the White House to wear a suit for this occasion. If he had done so, it would have looked like he was bowing to a superior, even though he has never worn a suite for anyone else and had not done so on any other occasion.
The reason why Zelensky was humiliated was to do with Trumps first impeachment. During the final months of Trump's first term in office. Congress had approved nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. Trump froze the aid in mid-2019 without giving a clear reason. Trump had a call with Zelenskyy where he pressed him to investigate Joe Biden and his son over their involvement with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company. Implying that he would release the military aid if Zelensky complied. Zelensky did not. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress before the end of his term in office. Trump may believe that Zelensky had caused him to lose the election by not investigating Biden's son.

I wonder if Trump and Vance reprimanded Elon Musk for wearing a t-shirt and baseball cap and carrying his kid on his shoulders during
his first major conference press conference in the Oval Office, standing next to Trump.

Musk is one of them. Zelensky is not.
Clearly, Zelensky was provoked. Trump needled him as soon as he met him "You dressed up today".
That is standard procedure among executives in USA. You always start a meeting or a presentation with a -good natured - insult, so that the other party respects you.

Yes it's the trademark of Trump. ALWAYS denigrate your opponents first, whoever he is.

By the way that stupid right wing journalist that ask Velensky about the suit is non other then Margarine's boyfriend.

In french we have a wonderful expression that goes like "à chaque torchon sa guenille", traduction I guess is... "to each rag its rag".

I don’t think Trump set Zelensky up, per se. This was supposed to be a simple ceremony to announce the signing of the rare minerals deal. I believe that was genuinely the plan.

But Trump literally cannot stop himself from being who he is. Trump continually makes statements in these public meetings that are at odds with reality and force his counter-part to refute what he is saying because if he doesn’t he is tacitly agreeing.

Trump did this with Macron when he claimed the US was spending more on Ukraine than Europe- Macron had to politely correct him.

Trump did it again with Keir Starmer from the UK- he claimed the UK and Canada were at odds forcing Starmer to correct him.

Trump did the same with Zelensky in trying to bully him into agreeing to a peace deal with no security guarantees- Zelensky cannot agree to that and cannot allow that statement to stand uncontested.

Trump has been doing this all week. He runs his international diplomacy like a reality television show.

From what I understand, that was indeed the plan.

But in the private meeting before the public meeting, Zelensky demanded a new concession before he would sign, namely US troops on the ground in Ukraine.

That naturally, and with good reason, invented Trump.

That was because Trump was demanding that Zelensky sign a peace agreement with no security guarantees. Trump is the one who took the conversation outside the bounds of what had already been agreed. He literally forced a response from Zelensky.

Did he do it on purpose? Yeah…because he was trying to asset dominance and it blew up on his face…but that’s just what Trump always does.

All quite true.

It is inconceivable that a mere reporter would attack and insult a visiting head of state, unless it was part of some set play arranged by the president.

The "reporter" was in fact MTG's current fuck-man and a regular MAGA crony and ass-licker. So he was there for a specific purpose and to play a specific role.

It is inconceivable that a visiting head of state - let alone a war hero - would be attacked for attire choices. Major breach of protocol.

Trump is getting more and more crazy. To perceive a WH event as some sort of corporate board meeting where the host's clique gangs up to humiliate a visitor is totally bizarre. No one would do this outside the world of shabby boardroom power plays.

It's also a major mis read of the other allied countries, all of whom set up similar events where Z showed up in his war clothes and was feted and made much of, in what was clearly an attempt by the European countries to make Trump eat shit.

The meeting was strange as fuck in many other ways as well, all to do with Trump and Vance's incompetence and fuckery.

Trump is too old and dumb and senile and simply cannot play on the field any more. No one half competent makes ANY of those mistakes - let alone in public.

I am of the view Trump may not be as dumb as people think when
and where he can save a few bucks. I don't believe Zelensky was set
up to be humiliated. If the clash was indeed pre-planned by Trump
and JD it makes more sense for Z to have been set up to receive more aid
from other NATO members. Trump would be pleased seeing that Starmer
and sooner other NATO nations coming to the rescue of Ukraine. Trump
is the type of cheapo who prefers someone else to foot the bill even for
events he hosts.

Except it's not his money. It's America's. But he would get the credit for the deal.
