BTW, to Gretzky's credit, Ovechkin is likely going to require more games to achieve this than Gretzky did, and Ovechkin still falls way short of Gretzky on assists, so I'll maintain Gretzky is still the best player to ever play the game.
My question to you is why are you excusing Gretzky for what he did at the 4 Nations final? You're either on the side of Canada or on the side of the USA. Pick a side because you can't do both.
Dear god, I appear to be agreeing with @mitchell76....But, I sort of feel this is blown out of proportion. I HATE the MAGA movement. I am not thrilled that Gretzky seems to support it. But, I also do not for a second doubt he loves Canada. I haven't heard him say anything about supporting the 51st state bullshit. I also don't have a problem with him giving the US bench a thumbs up after the game. They played hard and it was a great game. There is nothing wrong with telling an opponent (in sports) that they did well.
Now, the argument can fairly be made that Gretzky hasn't said shit about MAGA and things like deportation, attacking the LGBTQ community or anything else. But, I still think he is a Canadian legend. Now, if he starts saying Canada should join the US....my opinion will change drastically.
