So clearly Mexico caved, he probably had some crazy list of demand for Trudeau but they will talk again this afternoon. IMHO I wil STILL continue with my plan to spend less on USA. As I said before, even if there are not tariffs, serious damage has been done to Canada and its ability to attract foreign investment.

Not really sure that's caving.

She does a PR stunt and hopes that public opinion in 30 days shifts against the tariffs.

I'd like to see what she really agreed to, but "sending troops to the border" in and of itself is mostly just PR bullshit that Trump likes that isn't much of a concession by Mexico.

All Trump cares about is optics.
"They are sending 10K troops to the border and we are going to have no more illegals and a strong border. I am a deal maker king and look I did something sleepy Joe and the radical left dems did not" is the kind of messaging he is looking to send.
She just gave him that and he backed off.
It isn't caving.
Trump must be awfully easy to handle, diplomatically speaking if he is this simple minded.

Yes that's easy for them, they have a nice sunny border. The Canadian border has some really tough terrain and there are also native reservations that need to be considered. If Trumpty is just asking for optical illusions, its a no brainer. But serious damage has already been done.

Why foreign investment? I think the only damage being done is by trump, the whole world is going to be against him

Because when people invest in Canada, access to the US market is probably the #1 consideration in most cases.

Mexico kind of did this during the UMCSA negotiations as well, right?
Send 15,000 troops to the border.

And this time she got him to commit to gun control.
And, according to her, he backed off on the trade deficit demand.

So it kind of looks like Trump caved here.

It won't get reported that way by Trump and his PR team, but it looks like he backed down.

Maybe some people in the administration advised him that manufacturing isn't just going to just "come back" just because there is a tariff and the ones who will be most affected is his core base.

Trump gets what he wanted from Mexico...upped security at the border. He'll go month by month just keep them on there toes. Cartels can't be happy with this.

Justin better have his best socks on for this afternoon....

Hard to say.
Trump clearly likes tariffs for their own sake, so I don't think it is the last we will hear of it.
Trump doesn't care about "bringing manufacturing back" and he certainly doesn't care if his base is affected outside of "will this make me look bad".

That's what Trump wanted from the beginning, it was obvious. He wants the same border security he had when he left.

Now he's got it. Promise delivered.

The question is what does he really want from Canada?...Our borders are not nearly as porous. We'd actually benefit more than them with increased border security....Could he want Canada to meet it's NATO commitments?

As long as there are drug consumers in the US the cartels are laughing. They have tunnels, drones, boats, and planes via either the border by land, sea, or air to cross it. And the cartels are helped from the inside. Believe me, they are sleeping like babies.

But he didn't get anything here.
These are moves Mexico was already making.

Now he's got it. Promise delivered.
Yes, that's going to be the PR spin to cover how inept this was.
And, sadly, it is mostly going to work since his fan base doesn't pay attention and his propaganda network is strong.

The question is what does he really want from Canada?...Our borders are not nearly as porous. We'd actually benefit more than them with increased border security....Could he want Canada to meet it's NATO commitments?
The question is "what would Trump fall for as a win that Canada is already doing"?
This is the problem dealing with a malignant narcissist whose brain is tapioca pudding.

Notice that he never threatened Mexico with becoming the 51st state.

Now, if Canada is lucky, some bullshit "crackdown on Fentanyl" statement may be enough for Trump to back off.
He can claim he has cracked down on illegal drugs and his tariffs were a big success.

The problem is that he loves tariffs and even giving him pacifier only made him agree to back off for a month.
One hopes that enough people will get to him to convince him not to just start all over again, but who knows.
