Canadian study claims smoking weed more harmful than tobacco

I was talking to Respirologist and he said that a lot of the damage is from the hot air. this is a large study, so more credible.

Researchers with University of Ottawa and Ottawa Hospital share findings from a 15-year-long investigation

A preliminary Canadian study exploring the effects of cannabis smoking on lungs found that weed users have higher rates of emphysema and airway diseases than their non-smoking or tobacco-only smoking counterparts.

Despite higher global cannabis consumption — the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reported in 2022 that legalization in North America appears to have increased daily cannabis use — investigators with the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital say there’s little evidence of the associated effects on lungs.

To get a better picture of what those effects might be, researchers evaluated chest CT (computerized tomography) scans taken between October 2005 and July 2020 for marijuana smokers, non-smokers and tobacco-only smokers over age 50 who had been heavy cigarette smokers for more than 25 years. Researchers ended up evaluating 56, 57 and 33 such smokers, respectively.

Investigators then compared the rates of paraseptal emphysema (which damages the tiny ducts that connect to the air sacs in the lungs), airway changes, gynecomastia (overdevelopment or enlargement of the breast tissue in men or boys that is associated with a slightly higher risk of breast cancer) and coronary artery calcification (calcium builds up in the walls of coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle).
Published in peer-reviewed Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the preliminary findings show 75 per cent of cannabis smokers had emphysema compared to just five per cent of non-smokers. Tobacco-only smokers were closer to weed smokers, with 67 per cent having the disease.

Looking at age specifically, emphysema rates were higher in 93 per cent of cannabis smokers compared to 67 per cent of tobacco-only smokers.

Beyond emphysema, though, “rates of bronchial thickening, bronchiectasis and mucoid impaction were higher among marijuana smokers compared with the other groups,” study authors write. Additionally, gynecomastia was more common in cannabis smokers, noted in 38 per cent of the group, than the 16 per cent in non-smokers and 11 per cent in tobacco-only smokers.

Researchers noted that the reason for higher rates of emphysema and airway inflammation in cannabis smokers “may be due to the way that marijuana is smoked and the fact that marijuana smoke enters the lungs unfiltered,” notes a statement from the RSNA.

This results in more particulates reaching the airways from smoking marijuana, the statement explains, adding that cannabis is inhaled with a longer breath hold and puff volume than tobacco smoke.

“It has been suggested that smoking a marijuana joint deposits four times more particulates in the lung than an average tobacco cigarette,” says study author Dr. Giselle Revah, a radiologist at The Ottawa Hospital and an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. “These particulates are likely airway irritants.”

Dr. Revah told CNN that airway inflammation early on is reversible. “When I see mucus and thickening of the airways, if you stop the exposure, that should improve. But sometimes that can lead to dilatation of the airways and when it’s dilated, then it’s irreversible,” she explained.

Smoking weeds generates handsome tax revenue that
more than offsets the little harm it causes. It is no more
harmful than drinking beers IMO.

For so long, pot smokers (that don't add tobacco) have been bragging that it is much less harmful for your lungs than smoking tobacco.

Just like many pot smokers claim it is non-addictive but that is a different conversation.

I've never understood their reasoning.

Both create smoke that is inhaled into your lungs and if you ask me, I see pot smokers coughing a lot more than tobacco smokers both while smoking and while not.

I am currently listening to the pot smoker on a balcony somewhere above my condo coughing his lungs out. It is an 8am, 5pm, 9pm and midnight occurence. Like clockwork.

It is annoying but comical.

Pot is just as harmful as tobacco. Even vaping is harmful. Your lungs were only meant for air.

The only thing I want in my lungs is air. And even that is loaded with crap.

Anyone who thinks smoking dope (or anything else) is harmless is in severe denial.
Yeah. They say that there is plastic in the rain now.

The study’s findings about cannabis smoking and its impact on the lungs seem to confirm what a lot of people suspect—how you smoke matters just as much as what you smoke. The unfiltered smoke and longer breath holds with cannabis could definitely explain the higher rates of emphysema and airway inflammation.

For anyone looking to reduce risks while still enjoying alternatives, switching to vaporizing might be worth considering. Using a device like VIHO Supercharge offers a way to enjoy similar effects without the direct impact of unfiltered smoke and excessive heat on your lungs.

I used to smoke week once in a while, but haven't touched the stuff in years.

From my understanding, a major problem with smoking joints or cigarettes is the temperature of the gasses you're inhaling. If you want to get high, the best option is edibles, but they take time to kick in. The next best option is using a vaporizer. The smoke you you inhale is cool and therefore less damaging to your lungs.

I have talked about being a medical marijuana user on this site many times before. I would regularly keep up with my blood work and in the summer it came back with some results I was not happy about. Long term smoking usually leaves you with a high white blood cell count because of the inflammation but my counts were really high this time and I had some other indicators of worse inflammation issues.

I changed up my pharmaceuticals and stopped using the marijuana. I had no side effects from quitting. I guess for me because it was for medical use, I was not addicted and quit “cold turkey” as they would say. Had my last joint on a Wednesday and started taking the new meds on a Thursday and didn’t have a craving or anything.

I do like it better. It is cheaper for one, I don’t have to worry about the smell for two and my breathing is better. I don’t wake up with a flem feeling in my throat all the time and I save time because I don’t have to make time to roll and smoke a couple of times of day. Just pop my pill in seconds and done.

I have never done edibles because it is not about getting high for me.

I've been smoking weed since I was 14...i'm 50 now so when done in moderation and with the use of a bong ( in my teens it was straight joints), IMO the harm could be minimal or none. I don't consume alcohol (at all). I also don't smoke till i'm smashed...i still do it...but probably like 2x a month...or sometimes once...i had a lot of edibles too.. the oreo kind...

I started smoking weed after having brain surgery in 2019, and have decided after my next botox appointment to try and quit and stick to edibles exclusively. I'm hacking way too much and it's time. It spared me tons of headaches but it's not worth destroying my lungs much more.

It's also pricey and that's motivating me too.

Those who know know that this and many side effects of weed usage is cause by the combustion of the weed, not the weed itself, try doing this research on people that vape weed. Also tobacco is cancerigenous, this study and this affirmation that tobacco is less harmful than weed was paid by the tobacco industry :ROFLMAO:

Really, paid for by tobacco companies? Please show me the proof of this? Results were published in respected medical journals.
The truth is that both items can fuck up our lungs, just like fumes from kitchens where there is a lot of frying going on. Look up lung cancer rates in East Asian housewives who fry a lot of foods.
