Why would anybody be surprised that Elon does the NAZI salute. If you look at the attendees at the inauguration it is a model for Corporatism, Trump and Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Apple guy etc.
Corporatism is one of the cornerstones of Fascism.

This article suggests giving Elon the benefit of the doubt. It seems to me that Elon has not done much to earn that trust; in fact, he’s done quite the opposite.

Bending towards power means giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Proving he can get away with it and even "the hostile press" [sic] will rush to excuse it is likely part of why he did it.
