So as you probably heard, Trump wants to turn Canada into the 51st State.
Thats obviously never going to happen.
But what could happen is a North-American Union similar to the European Union.
And I would be all for that.

Here's how it might work:

- Canada, the US, and Mexico become one Union.
- All 3 countries share the same currency.
- All 3 countries would still keep their name and their same government system.
- People of all 3 countries can work in all 3 countries, but they can only vote in their own country.
- Canada would keep its healthcare system and gun control laws.
- We could get rid of customs, or we could keep them (some EU countries still have border control).
- All 3 countries would keep their legal systems (for example, no death penalty or overly harsh sentences).

Thats just off the top of my head. Feel free to add things.

I see no downside to this whole idea, only an upside

It's never going to happen because it's a joke that people are losing their shit over.

But the union idea seems interesting...

Yup, so long as we can keep our autonomy as Canadians I'm all in favor of it.

Becoming the 51st State is a non-starter for most people

Immigration policy. USA would have sway. It's why Brexit happened. Lowering of wages as Mexico residents travel like crazy to work. Several Canadian businesses swallowed up.

This is getting more traction than I thought it would...
They are free to go. Apply. Or go across the border and live illegally.

They are the same as the celebrities who threatened to leave if Trump is elected. No one is stopping you here in Canada from emigration.

A big reason for the inception of the EU was to further intertwine Europe together to avoid conflict.

If North America was full of hostilities then a union could be a good idea. Without hostility, just free trade is warranted. Alternatively if China was at North America's borders with a military threat then a union could very well be warranted.

Supposing it made undeniable sense to form a union, Quebec would not play ball. Canada is barely a union with Quebec getting special treatment and afforded their distinct society status.

It was economic. The whole thing started as a cross border trucker deal between France and Germany that expanded into the thing it is today. But it is an undemocratic beast, run by Appointees who work for business.

I'd much prefer CANZUK, the joining of Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand into a economic and free-travel movement.

We're becoming too "North American" as it is. I feel a sense of brotherhood and family with the UK, Australia and New Zealand -- I don't feel that with the US or Mexico. And Mexico, especially, would economically drag shit down for us, given that it's a completely corrupt country practically run by drug cartels and crooks.

Never gonna happen. The US is paranoid about border security. Adopting the US currency would fuck up business here - there would be no incentive to do business here if it wasn't 1.40 - 1. Canada would essentially become Alaska. We can't compete with the Americans at an even dollar. Can you imagine an American politician promoting wide open borders with Canada and Mexico?
