I can't trust buying privately. I don't know enough about cars and taking each car to my mechanic to look at would be a pain. They would only get a short time to do a quick check and could easily miss something.
I would rather buy from a dealership, with CarFax and dealer service records. It may take me a longer time to find that but I have the luxury of time.
This is true but if you do buy privately ask to see the entire summary of the car's maintenance and then have your mechanic give the vehicle a serious once over on everything. I did this once as a precaution even though the owner was meticulous about car upkeep. And it's well worth the expense vs being stuck with a poorly maintained car.
And IF there's no legit car maintenance summary then walk away.

you can hire a mobile mechanic that does inspections (private/dealer). $200-$300 have them go over the major stuff. they have a youtube channel for those that do inspections without the buyer present; they've been at this for a long time btw.

I've had good luck with both web and app. Shitty the website gives you a hard time as its really a lot nicer to see images and read specs on a larger screen
