Do Harsher Laws in the USA deter Crime ? compared to Canada

Inversely, you just have to look at Canada at how NOT how to do things.
building 100 new jails like the USA does it not curbing crime. So if Canada follows the Americans do you think you'll sleep better at night?
I don't know about you guys but my nefews 7 bikes have been stolen since last Spring.He continuously buys locks for them arms them to the tits and poof gone. Then I hear there's an auction of 2000 bikes. Should we start by chopping a finger off ?
Depends how harsh the punishments are. As Kelly alluded to, Singapore has harsh punishments for pretty minor crimes, e.g. fines for possession of gum (yes, gum), jail/caning for vandalism, death penalty for any drug possession including weed. It works there because these "crimes" aren't worth the punishment, but I don't think those kinds of punishments would fly in most western democracies.
For more serious crimes, I'm not sure if harsh punishment is a deterrent because most criminals don't expect to get caught. It's not like they do a risk-reward analysis and decide "yeah I guess it's worth it to carjack this guy if it might only be 1 year in jail".
As for building more prisons, that's not meant to deter crime, it's meant to be able to actually keep people in jail. One of the reasons so many people get out on bail or released early from their sentences is because they don't have enough capacity. Another issue is that keeping people incarcerated is expensive. People want criminals to be thrown in jail, but they don't want to pay the taxes that would pay for that.

Great point. Pierre Polivere wants all drugs illegal again. In fact most of his policy promises are to bring the Country backwards.So I ask you this When he wants to get rid of social assistance and force people to work and stop paying for special needs groups such as autism or other brain disorders how is he possibly going to cut our tax as conservatives promise and make our laws stricter and harsher and he will force every woman whos raped to give birth how in the world can Canadians get fair taxes with his policies on crime. I heard through the grapevine there's a store in Ontario that when the owner finds you stealing he ties you to a chair dumps you in the freezer and breaks the ofdd persons arm.When I heard about this I thought holy fuck this is going on in Ontario I actually buy stuff there. So I thought if its a homeless starving man and that happens to him I feel bad but if its some thug filling up bags of stuff selling it for drugs then ya that guy will probably never steal again there lol but people will take it in there own hands if the justice system fails them also is it worth it not but owners are going bonkers with theft.
Look at Norway, which has the lowest recidivism rate in the world.
I'd have to say it starts with the rights of criminals, when they clearly show no regard for the rights of others. If you commit crimes, (criminal code and without listing, crimes like murder, theft, assault and weapons crimes, etc.) then your rights should be forfeit. Plain and simple. Our courts are too lenient, dropping weapons charges, giving 2 for one for pretrial incarceration, even though they are guilty AF! The catch and release that is the plague of our streets right now. Regardless, we work on a system that thinks that the system can reform criminals, when it clearly does nothing of the sort. I'd also add that our immigration system has helped bring criminals into this country in greater numbers. So yes, our laws add to the how unsafe our streets are now and do nothing to deter crime.

I agree with this 100%.
But when the adults start running things again, more jails will be required.
It's impossible for a piece of shit to commit a crime while in jail which is all that has to be said on that topic.
Now if building more jails and putting and keeping these POS in them doesn't curb our crime problem, then we have a completely different problem.
Then we have to look at why we have so many POS popping up in society. We figure out root cause of that problem, fix it and then we are ok.
Although the 2nd problem is the important one, it isn't related to the 1st one. In any functioning society, we have to have laws and we need to enforce those laws in a manner so that law doesn't pay.
Our current society is starting to malfunction. Breaking the law pays and it pays handsomely with little to no consequences for the criminals.
Maybe we can dream that there will be a day when we don't have a drama teacher running out country.

isnt this sad? that there's thousands of people in jail for weed in the states .....As much as it pisses me off when I get ripped off by an addict ill tell you this drug addicts do not become clean being locked up. Its like throwing a stoner in jail because he wants to numb the depression or just likes buzz to get his mojo on .most addicts were victims of abuse. We need 100s of rehabs not jails IMO.Legalize the drugs then you can give tax cuts.
