You haven't been able to buy a handgun with a "restricted" licence since 1969.
I always think Trudeau is lying, he is a politician.
No hand gun sales in canada except for those with special exemptions is true.
You still haven't answered if your original post is true."but Trudeau made handguns illegal"
with all the restrictions he put on buying, selling and transferring handguns

it's same as if they were banned outright

I don't think and gun store in Canada has any handguns for sale on their web site

of course you could have. until 2 years ago when Trudeau's handgun freeze came into effect

"A PAL for non-restricted firearms allows its holders to acquire and possess any non-restricted firearm, while an RPAL for restricted firearms allows the holder to acquire and possess restricted firearms. Only those who are grandfathered into the prohibited-class of firearms (12.2, 12.3 etc.)"

Police associations call for ‘immediate action’ on bail reform after Toronto gunfight

Funny how things work...Poilievre has been pushing for more effective bail reform forever and he always gets push-back by the Libs.
But when Trudeau adopts "Conservative" policies (usually too late) he's praised and not called things like "xenophobe", ie immigration control.

Poilievre's 'jail, not bail' idea may not pass constitutional muster, experts say

@PeteOsborne before you post again just take 1 minute and call a gun store please
I called the one my coworker got his from, I can't ask him what paperwork he has since he is off deer hunting this week.
https://theammosource.com/
I was told if I have the appropriate paperwork confirming I have an exemption attached to an E-mail describing the type of handgun I am looking for they will verify my exemption then try to find a supplier for the handgun.
They will then contact me to come in in person with the originals, once this is verified they will let me know how much and how long it will take to get one.
They require payment in full before they will order.

Found this one and called them as well, the guy who answered said they do not stock any of the guns on site but if I came in and talked to the manager (he wasn't in) he would know more about the aquisition process.
He did say he doesn't believe they have sold any or had any requests for any since he started there 4 months ago.

Your friend was very lucky...and still a poor example to defend the position of handguns not "actually being banned".

I remember when it was first announced, we had US style panic buying of restricted firearms; stock flew off the shelves in a matter of hours, if not days and the only thing left are overpriced antiques. Supply, at the retail level, is virtually non-existent.

Last I saw, which admittedly was a while ago, IPSC tried to get recognition from IOC, so that more of these exceptions could exist within the shooting committee here in Canada. Glad to see that some common sense has prevailed, but I can assure you it isn't commonplace.

Despite all that, again, it hasn't done anything to enhance public safety. What a surprise...not really.

I can hit a bloke in the wrist -taking the gun out of his hand - w my browning hi power at 50 feet...
If it is a paper target....
If it is not moving...
If I'm leaning on a stable post lol...
Real life shootouts are shit shows and even trained cops sometimes can't hit the side of a barn when under stress.
A bloke pulled out a gun at NYC coppers about 10 years ago copper fired 9 round from 15 feet and hit the bloke once.

They seem to essentially act as brokers between competitive shooters these days; which would explain why your buddy paid over double retail for his new-to-him pistol.

your friend might have a special exemption

you can still get one if you have written permission from provincial CFO (chief firearms officer)

like Olympic shooters, trappers, prospectors
I was told if I have the appropriate paperwork confirming I have an exemption attached to an E-mail describing the type of handgun I am looking for they will verify my exemption then try to find a supplier for the handgun.
meaning effectively that we can't buy a handgun in Canada at this point without special exemption

2 years ago, before Trudeau's freeze

if you had RPAL, you could have simply buy a handgun on line and have it deliver by the post office

these boys don't seem to have a problem getting their hands on handguns

looks like everybody there has one and they are not shy about showing them off

Trudeau disarmed Canadians and now only criminals have weapons

:(
