That's not really a comparable stat because in 1966 the retirement age was much lower than it is today. What we need to look at is what is the labor force participation rate vs. the number of retirees. I would agree the ratio today is quite a bit lower than in 1966 but not at the extreme's you're suggesting.

there were also more tax deductions available to Canadians in 1966 and no GST
the husband was the bread winner , while wifey stayed home and raise the kids
if you put the hours and years in at work you could still get by without marketable skills
a house cost far less as a % of disposable income
you could but a new vehicle for $3K to $4K
and gasoline was 31 cents per gallon
the federal government entire budget was $8.8 billion for the whole year

The government's deficit for the period from April 2023 to March 2024 was $50.9 billion.

Most employers provided company pensions.
Now that is almost exclusively for govt employees

comparing 1966 to today is of limited value, as the environment has change significantly

"Shithole countries" denialism and deflection writ large.

That's not propaganda, but plain, good ole fashioned, far right-wing shithole values.
Venezuela is a shithole, thanks to socialism
Most of the middle east is beautiful, but religious hatred and conflict has turned a lot of it into a shithole
India is beautiful, but too many people have turned it into a shithole
Northern Canada is stunning beautiful, but if you can not drink the water , its a shithole
San Francisco had for the longest time been labelled as a spectacularly beautiful city.
Now the homeless druggies take a dump in the middle of the street there. That is pretty much the definition of a shithole.

you loonie lefties get triggered by a word
grow up

Is the best response you can provide to suggest I'm trolling? Didn't think you would give up that easily.
"How dare you suggest that I'm a troll!" - infamous quote emanating from the dank, darkness under a bridge.

Question - Why are you always having to defend against being likened to a troll?

The above statement appears to be written by someone with a shithole country's bumpkin knowledge.

1) The GST, replaced a previous hidden 13.5% manufacturers' sales tax (MST).

2) There were but a fraction of the tax deductions, tax breaks and loopholes, subsidies and other corporate and top 2% gov't welfare freebies asvailable back then. That is when corporations were corporations and not the fat pigs sucking off public funded resources as they are today.

3) The corporate to taxpayer ratio of gov't revenue sources back then was I believe in the range of 65:35. Now it's reversed.

Hey lady, your slip loonie-ness is showing.

Everyone that disagrees with you is labelled a troll. Will this always be your go to or do you think over time you will evolve and come up with something more intelligent. My rhetorical question of the day.:ROFLMAO:
I've never suggested Skoob is a troll. I've always maintained that he is woefully misinformed and willfully brainwashed, right-wing zealot, parroting right-wing slogans, chants and us vs. them wholly fabricated culture war nonsense. An, "I win, you lose" zero sum tool and fool.

You on the other hand, behaves exactly as a troll would.

If you're always feeling, the urge, the need, the compunction to defend against and deny that you behave like a troll, what does that say about you?

You're way smarter than Skoob and unlike Skoob, you wholly understand that giving $200 to every taxpayer just before an unlegislated, unneeded, and unwanted early election is not only basically craven bribery, but also instantly creates a $3.2billion deficit, Skoob does not.

Awwww...you're offended and would have preferred nicer words to describe the same problem. I get it...we need to remember that to get your vote, we use pretty words like "peoplekind" etc.

The only ones likening me to a troll are the ones who's arguments crumble and need to distract from their disillusioned failure and embarrassment: a.k.a. You.

I don't know that I've ever bothered to make the effort to defend against the troll accusation. If someone sees me as a troll do I care at all what so ever? Nope. Additionally if someone calls me a Nazi do I care at all what so ever? Nope. Matter of fact do I care if anyone calls me anything or accuses me of being something I know that Im not? Nope . You see, I just don't care. This my good friend is the internet where anyone can say anything and anyone can be anything so I keep that in perspective and take everything with a pinch of salt as opposed to just a grain. That being said it definitely seems like you've called Scoob a troll or at least suggested it and again it's because someone disagrees with your warped, biased perspective. It reminds me of playing soccer in my youth with the kid up the street that cries and takes his ball home every time someone scores on his team. I would tell you to do better but I already know this is the best you've got. 🤷‍♂️
Why are you always having to explain yourself?

Always explaining oneself does not meet the hallmark of an "I don't care whatsoever" person that you proclaim that you are. Quite the opposite in fact.

Shouldn't you be getting your "Trudeau Fooled Me" t-shirt printed right about now?

Says the guy who says things like "I'm not going to respond with an explanation..." then spews multi-paragraph gibberish. Every time.

Awww...you don't like tax payers getting some money they paid in crazy taxes back. Right.

I wish Trudeau would call an early election don't you?

If I thought you could comprehend the situation without a wordy reply I wouldn't have bothered but since I tend to have pity on the less intelligent and have too much time on my hands today I decided to explain. It's raining outside so I'm kinda bored. I guess next time I'll just tell you to go shit in your hat. 🤷‍♂️
There u go again, always having to explain yourself.

You're deja vu all over again .... and again ...... and again .........

its not my fault you get confused by historical facts

1) The GST, replaced a previous hidden 13.5% manufacturers' sales tax (MST).
it is still an incremental tax burden on the consumer as consumer retirees do not buy a lot of Canadian manufactured goods
unless you are completely stunned you must know the GST was a net windfall for the Federal govt
it provided the tax revenue to pay down Trudeau sr. irresponsible debt burden
So will the Federal Govt need GST 2.0 +++++ to pay down Justin (the moron) Trudeaus enormous debt

2) There were but a fraction of the tax deductions, tax breaks and loopholes, subsidies and other corporate and top 2% gov't welfare freebies asvailable back then. That is when corporations were corporations and not the fat pigs sucking off public funded resources as they are today.
you do not have a clue what you are blithering about
The Capital gains exemption was a lifetime $1,000,000 , which has been subsequently whittled away to nothing
no one needed to depend on any govt money for retirement if you had accumulated 100 K in tax free cap gains by 1966 + company pension

3) The corporate to taxpayer ratio of gov't revenue sources back then was I believe in the range of 65:35. Now it's reversed.
you are still not very bright
you just made another argument for reducing the size of govt.

GST was brought in by conservatives.

Corporate income taxes account for roughly just 12.3% of total revenue and social security contributions nowadays.

Personal income taxes account for well over 50% of total revenue and social security contributions nowadays.

12.3% measly frickin per cent Mr. JD Pennypacker, TERB's only self-proclaimed capitalist billionaire, titan of industry, commerce and trade.

And this does not include the multi-billions these corporate welfare bums reap from gov't subsidies.

As was stated, post WWII and beyond, corporate vs personal taxation revenue as a percentage of total gov't revenue was:

about 60 - 65% corporate vs 35-40 personal.

Chart which demonstrates the timeline of the great corporate conning of Canada:
