They're punishing the ruling provincial NDP party and it's leader David Eby.
Last count had the NDP up by 1 seat and the Greens owning 2 and likely to support the NDP.
Even if the NDP win, they still lost. They went from a projected landslide majority victory to a too close recount count.
The real issue now is how does this translate to the federal election?

New Brunswick Election tomorrow(Monday). Liberal leader Susan Holt apparently hasn't mentioned Justin at all during the campaign. Current Conservative Premier Brian Higgs amongst the lowest popular Canadian Premiers. Could be an interesting day for a variety of reasons.

I find it difficult to believe that over 900,000 British Columbians voted for the Needle, Drugs and Poverty Party. This is what happens when you get rid of voter photo ID requirements.
As soon as you hear Mail-in votes have increased, you already know what the deal is.
The new left strategy is to give all their voters mail-in ballots and have someone fill it out for them.
I guarantee most mail-in voters for BC NDP don't have a clue they voted.
