I think Elon Musk and his boring company have proposed something like this in Los Angeles. They just need faster boring machines, which they are working on.
I mean, the thing to keep in mind is that even if they were willing to pay a fair price for the 407, it'd be billions of dollars...the consortium that owns it (which includes CPPIB) would want to make a tidy profit...And, if they went about "nationalizing" it, what foreign business would invest here?Yup, the last conservative premiers screwed up the 407 and DoFo will make it 10x worse instead the easy fix if it means more contracts for his donors.
You ain't wrong....A lot of political ideas and government policy is like that
A great idea, with the best of intentions. What can possibly go wrong.
Well a lot actually.
The best solution is to just pay for all trucks passage on the 407.I mean, the thing to keep in mind is that even if they were willing to pay a fair price for the 407, it'd be billions of dollars...the consortium that owns it (which includes CPPIB) would want to make a tidy profit...And, if they went about "nationalizing" it, what foreign business would invest here?
All that being said....the whole Ontario Place/Therme deal gives me 407 flashbacks....
The following study: Comparison-of-Highway-413-and-Highway-407-for-Improving-Truck-and-Freight-Mobility-in-the-Greater-Toronto-Area.pdf (environmentaldefence.ca) pegs the cost of a provincial government fully covering the costs of commercial truck traffic on the 407 as $4billion over 30 years.I mean, the thing to keep in mind is that even if they were willing to pay a fair price for the 407, it'd be billions of dollars...the consortium that owns it (which includes CPPIB) would want to make a tidy profit...And, if they went about "nationalizing" it, what foreign business would invest here?

Not to mention that the higher cost of highway maintenance associated with truck traffic then falls to the 407 consortium and half of that profit still goes back into Canadian pensions. Win/win.The following study: Comparison-of-Highway-413-and-Highway-407-for-Improving-Truck-and-Freight-Mobility-in-the-Greater-Toronto-Area.pdf (environmentaldefence.ca) pegs the cost of a provincial government fully covering the costs of commercial truck traffic on the 407 as $4billion over 30 years.
This is much more cost effective and provides a rapid and realistic method of alleviating congestion on the 400 series of highways.
Folks, get your noggins around the fact that this Thug brainfart tunnel from hell is nothing but a political ploy and tactic that plays perfectly into his wedge issue politicking and diverts attention spans from real issues more pressing and dire which he has let fester and worse, purposely planned and manufactured to increase towards tipping points so that his go to private interests are called in to "fix".
So when someone presents a study by an organization that's remotely associated with the oil/gas industry about the climate, you and Frankfooter have a stroke. The following study: Comparison-of-Highway-413-and-Highway-407-for-Improving-Truck-and-Freight-Mobility-in-the-Greater-Toronto-Area.pdf (environmentaldefence.ca) pegs the cost of a provincial government fully covering the costs of commercial truck traffic on the 407 as $4billion over 30 years.

Looking at all options is what governments at all levels should do.Finally someone gave The Dougler a couple beers and talked some sense into him. IDK how someone so blatantly dumb can be responsible for Canada's largest and most significant province.![]()

What option r u talking about?Looking at all options is what governments at all levels should do.
Building tunnels, buying back 407, I'm sure there are more...try & keep current. What option r u talking about?
Thug's purely performative, political wedgie option?
I think DoFo has learned that the opposition (and people that just don't like him just because) will criticize any option or decision he makes available. No for the sake of no.Definitely not DoFo's strong point.
You cannot possibly believe that the Thug's "tunnel" utterance is actually a viable option worthy of wasting/diverting any time, resources and money to even study?I think DoFo has learned that the opposition (and people that just don't like him just because) will criticize any option or decision he makes available. No for the sake of no.
So why go through all that bs when you can work out the best option(s) and just communicate fewer things to be criticized about anyway?
They criticized the building of the Toronto subway back in the day for many of the same reasons. Now the same people who criticize things are the ones who praise public transit downtown.
Funny eh?
I bet people like you thought building the PATH under skyscrapers downtown was a waste of money too?You cannot possibly believe that the Thug's "tunnel" utterance is actually a viable option worthy of wasting/diverting any time, resources and money to even study?
If you do, Thug luvs ya, because his intent was to wedgie his culture vultures, rubes, hayseeds, yokels come early, $$ wasteful, not needed or wanted election time.
It is indeed a popularity contest but I think part of that is also about who people trust more than the next person. People trust Ford more than the other wackos in the other parties. That usually changes over time regardless. The thing is, at this point politics has become a popularity contest. If you can win the people over you will get yourself voted in despite a total lack of suitability. I'm sure Doug Ford is a nice guy but he is beyond unqualified to handle the responsibilities of a Premiere. Tbh he's not even qualified to run a pet store as far as I'm concerned. It blows my mind that such a great country has such piss poor leadership. On all levels.
You don't want to share the joy of driving the 401?Ford is missing the most obvious solution to traffic on 401
put bike lanes on the highway
if they work so great on Bloor St. just imagine how great they will work on 401
we can also ban transport trucks and use these instead
View attachment 364325
Do it.only on my bike
you convinced me, if you can't beat them then join them
I want bike lanes everywhere, even on all the highways!
let's get this traffic moving
His fantasy tunnel is as viable as was his fiasco of a $8.2billion shanty town, Greenbelt housing plan, his $1billion flop of a drowned into the depths of Lake Ontario underground parking fish tank.I bet people like you thought building the PATH under skyscrapers downtown was a waste of money too?
How about the study conducted in 2015 to bury part of the Gardiner?
Do you think it's an election issue and fear that DoFo will win again because more people will want it rather than more bike lanes? Shame on DoFo for giving people what they want.
In other words, when you're cornered, you pivot to another topic and start talking gibberish. Every time. His fantasy tunnel is as viable as was his fiasco of a $8.2billion shanty town, Greenbelt housing plan, his $1billion flop of a drowned into the depths of Lake Ontario underground parking fish tank.
I bet people just like you thought and still think they're wonderful wastes.
Shame on you, for allowing your dear leader, The Thug, play you for a rube, hayseed and yokel.
Wait, you think we need bike lanes for safety but are against them in the city?first build a bike lane on 401 and I will use it
if i didn't know any better, I would think that you want me to get hurt
lets play it safe
bike lanes on a highway would be safer than bike lanes on city streets
the problem with bike lanes on city streets are intersections
that's where bikers and cars come into contact with one another
there are no intersections on highways
you follow?
