Yes, it would've been in retaliation for Qassem Soleimani. But, that just feels really stupid for Iran to attempt something like this. As I said, the US would have to respond. And their choice of response tends to be Tomahawk cruise missiles. I wouldn't be shocked if they took out all Iranian political and religious leaders. But...that would likely trigger more violence, so it is difficult to see where this could all eventually lead....
The US doesn't want war with Iran and Iran doesn't want war in general. They haven't attacked anyone in 200 years.
But Iran also can't just sit there and let Israel assassinate and attack at will, so they will have to respond.
So far they've just been saying that they will and as long as they keep that threat alive Israel is stuck with cancelled flights, no tourists and and a pause.
Right now it appears they are waiting for the hopeless Gaza peace talks to finish, though it looks like everyone has given up. Netanyahu won't agree to a ceasefire that ends the genocide, just a pause. Valcazar argues that Hamas should accept the pause, hand over all the hostages and then continue to be bombed and starved.
When Israel bombed the Iranian embassy in Syria, Iran responded with an announced missile attack for show. They sent off a series of slower missiles that could be stopped, enough to placate their people but not enough to do real damage or start a war.
Likely when they respond it will be a bit more serious than that but we'll see. They could hit Israeli targets outside of Israel, they could assassinate a politician in return or they could continue to just issue threats.
