If you're looking to attribute someone for the traffic congestion in the GTA, look no further than René Lévesque, the separatist Premier of Quebec. He relocated all the corporate head offices that were once in Montreal to Toronto, bringing both prosperity and traffic along with them. I recall a time in Montreal when traveling from downtown to my home in Town of Mount Royal would typically take between one to one and a half hours on weekdays after 3 PM. During peak traffic after 3 PM, every street with more than two lanes was congested with traffic. On Fridays, the heavy traffic began around noon and persisted until 7 or 8 pm. These days in Montreal, a drive that once took me 1-1.5 hours can now be completed in half that time during peak traffic. Bumper-to-bumper traffic jams are no longer a common occurrence in the city.

Remember, you asked for it!

Record influx of people, low infrastructure spending, corruption, and ineptitude. It's not surprising.
20 years ago there was so much green space just north of the Gardiner in the downtown core. Then they started building all those new condos. 20 years ago I said - well I hope they upgrade the Gardiner because where the heck is all that traffic gonna go? 20 years later we have the same ole crappy Gardiner and what like 20 big highrise condos in that space. They need to fire the entire planning department.

Exactly - how the fuck is this her fault? Some people just love to throw blame around.
Well normally I would say, yes, its not the current mayor fault but in her case as a council members she has advocated for and made several policies that have caused the current crisis.

Personally she is a key player in both wanting the Gardner removed and did remove part of it, and wants to close it as long as possible , as well as has been a key player in the bike lane failure project.

Some of Olivia Chow's policies and decisions have been criticized for potentially increasing car traffic, including:
  • Removing the Gardiner Expressway East: Chow's proposal to remove the Gardiner Expressway East and replace it with a surface-level road has been criticized by some for potentially increasing traffic congestion and travel times.
  • Reducing Parking Requirements: While reducing parking requirements can encourage more compact, walkable neighborhoods, it can also lead to increased competition for parking spaces and potentially more circling traffic.
  • Increased Density without Corresponding Transit Improvements: Some critics argue that Chow's support for increased density and development in certain areas has not been matched by corresponding improvements to public transit, potentially leading to more car traffic.
  • Lack of Congestion Pricing: Chow's decision not to implement congestion pricing, a policy she had previously supported, has been criticized by some for potentially increasing traffic congestion.
  • Prioritizing Local Traffic over Through Traffic: Chow's decision to prioritize local traffic over through traffic on certain roads has been criticized by some for potentially increasing travel times and traffic congestion.
Other policies that may have increased car traffic include:
  • Increased Development in Suburban Areas: Chow's support for increased development in suburban areas has led to more car-dependent communities and potentially more traffic congestion.
  • Lack of Investment in Alternative Modes of Transportation: Some critics argue that Chow's investment in alternative modes of transportation, such as cycling infrastructure and public transit, has been insufficient, leading to increased reliance on cars.
It's important to note that the impact of these policies on car traffic is complex and depends on various factors, including implementation details and broader transportation trends.

To be fair, other big cities like London have massive government subsidies to make massive functioning subway systems that massively reduce traffic - our subway once was a pleasure to ride - It is Mike Harris who takes the most credit for destroying our subway system with the unification of Toronto hoax where he saved money mostly by ending services and expansion of services like Gardner maintenance, subway maintenance and expansion and removing almost all funding from schools by excluding things like school pools from the funding formula (which at the very least needed money to shut down those pools safely rather than have decaying danger holes and heat sinks in school buildings.

She has a history of big future projects like Olympic bids that fail, and Dundas 3 million dollar renaming rather than dealing with essentials. The 3 million dollar renaming is pure insanity and the soccar game is the next insanity that needs to be stopped.

Two fixes:
One DVP should have tolls on it TEMPORARILY for everyone not living in the GTA. WIth 100 k per day use or more even a dollar per use could potential generate 36 million a year.
-Massive increase in TTC prices to make its self sustaining with logical discounts - say anyone without a car or drivers license.
-support of park outside the city and take transit to get into the city with people will avoid the DVP in general because there cheap but many will not as long as its a reasonable amount.

Phil is the smartest guy on TERB. He is never wrong.

In fair TERB, where Phil doth reign supreme, A man of wit, whose wisdom doth redeem. Never wrong, his intellect doth soar on high, Navigating markets where fortunes lie.

His portfolio vast, a treasury untold, Each day he gathers wealth, a story so bold. Millions accrue with each decisive play, In the stock market's dance, he holds the sway.

High-rise towers, monuments to his name, And designer name U-mobile a plenty, in glory he doth claim. Yet, in contrast stark, in dawn's early light, He wakes within a cardboard home's bleak sight.

O paradox! How can it thus be true? The smartest man, with wealth and power in view, Yet sleeps in humble carboard box, his fortune a guise, Amidst the grandeur that he claims, all lies.

For in this realm of fantasy and fame, Phil's tale unfolds, a man of nuanced frame. Wherein contradictions weave their mystic art, The truth of his existence sets apart.

So, as the stars that grace the midnight sky, Phil's essence lingers, truth and wealth defy. In TERB's domain, where dreams and realities blend, The smartest man's tale, to our hearts doth extend.

Thank you for typing all that out. Must have taken a while but personally I don’t give a fuck.

She may have voted for shit etc, but we don’t live in a country where one person has the say over everything. This is not solely her fault. You even say Harris is mostly at fault for the transit issues. So I stand by what I said, people just like blaming others for shit. Is it not HER fault. She didn’t do this all on her own. That is my stance if I have to have one but again, I don’t give a fuck. I don’t go to Toronto.

20 years there was mostly parking lots, parking lots, parking lots, abandoned brownfield lots, plus old warehouses and the odd splattering of old industrial, commercial, transportation and mfg, buildings surrounding the Gardiner on all sides.

It was a moonscape of asphalt, dust, dirt concrete and brick with barely a green living thing down there.

There are posters in this thread who haven't got a frickin clue what they're talking about.

We built TORONTO to survive a Huricane after Hazel. The flood plains and green spaces where converted to condos, this is a problem caused by higher flooding, but we would have been fine it where not for excess development. The DVP for example with its swamp is key in flood control. And in fact, the DVP is designed to get flooded, to save the rest of the city it necessary.
This is mostly accurate. There were so many creeks and streams that were built over as well. I would say that the infrastructure still needs to be overhauled, because I think we'll be seeing this type of rain more frequently...

She's been mayor for over a year now (since July 12, 2023)
Wow....time flies.

But, again, I recall traffic being pretty fucking bad a year ago. And longer. And, a lot of this construction NEEDS to happen. We don't want overpasses collapsing, like they've done in Montreal....

People come into Toronto for work purposes. Most of us dread it now and only do it when we must.

While you're two wheeling around, we are trying to get reasonably close, within a few blocks now at best, to park and go in to complete the work we were scheduled for.

Unlike 20 years ago where it was fun to stay in town when the work was done, go out perhaps for dinner and then make the drive home - we know the 2-3 hour drive that awaits us, motivating us to get going and get the fuck out.
I live outside of Toronto but work there. I have taken public transit to get to work for the last 15 years. It is far more efficient and economical than driving for me.

Where did you get the above? A source would be very informative as to it's accuracy and bias.

I hope you and others are aware that Olivia left her City of Toronto council seat in 2005 and had no official involvement in City of Toronto council proposals, votes, and decisions nor in advancing policies and plans from the executive office for 18 frickin years.

Thus, she only returned to having any official role in City of Toronto council decisions as mayor in July 2023. That is a gap of 18 years without any influence on Toronto city council or in the mayor's office.

18 years away from the city and now we get the above quoted and other bullshit narratives that somehow in absentia she is to blame for the Gardiner, the Gardiner rehab chaos, traffic congestion, anti-bike lane advocate heads exploding, density, housing, transportation and every other issue that was caused and festered under right-wing mayors and councils, right-wing suburban councilors during her 18 year absence.

Make no mistake, it was right-wing John Tory and right-wing suburban council majorities that voted to proceed with the Gardiner rehab debacle that is causing a large portion of traffic congestion and chaos.

There is so much nonsense in the above quoted post that I do not have time at this moment to address.

The OP is obviously caught up in this nonsense.

For example: The OP is claiming "Dundas 3 million renaming" which in actuality it is less than a third of that. The "soccer game" which is totally and all a John Tory and right-wing council decision.
