You don't need an in-depth understanding of politics
in the UK to observe that their Conservative party on
comparison with their counterparts in the U.S. and Canada
is liberal. On issues like LGBT rights, climate change and
Ukraine War they are nearly as progressive as other centrist
and center-left political parties in Europe.
That's because it's Europe and not the US, where the right incorporates Catholic fundamentalism and Protestant evangelicalism and gun rights and shit.
The problem for the Tories was competence. The post Brexit Tory party played heavily to the far right "We hates Furriners and Not Whites!" base and had no doable plans for the economy, social services or anything else. Essentially, the post 2016 Tories were a 1-trick pony that leaned on Brexit as its electoral weapon.
Brexit was heavily over-promised to win the Tories the 2017 and 2019 elections and - inevitably - failed to deliver because it was always a bullshit political scam and a self-wound to the British economy. And the Tories had nothing else to offer.
Worse, most of the pre Brexit intelligent Tory parliamentarians bailed after 2016 and the party advanced persons who appealed to the Base. So you got dum-dums like Liz Truss being promoted FAR beyond their ability level. Virtually the entire Tory cabinet were clearly not competent to fill their posts. They then deflected and fought back with political rhetoric designed to appeal to the Base and stoke division and anger.
This left them fucked on 2 levels. First, it lost them the educated centre-right vote. Anyone with a brain could see how pathetic the Tories had become. So Starmer - who is extremely smart - moved Labour to the right and gobbled up the centre vote. That fucked the Tories badly.
Then Farage opportunistically attacked the Tories from the far right with a "I hate Non Whites even more than the Tories and most of my candidates are actual Nazis and that's not a bad thing!" platform. So the Tories lost the far right, low information, hate-stalgia base that they were leaning on after 2019.
Result was the worse electoral loss in British history.
