That's too bad. Would have preferred a more suffering death.
Doesn`t much matter if you chose to fly in mountainous terrain in dense fog. WTF was the pilot thinking.
Maybe the pilot did not calculate that the earth is flat?
Or may be the pilot was just following orders.
There can be a lot of direct and/or implied pressure exerted on the pilot to fly when it’s not a good idea to do so. Especially in a military state like Iran.
I saw a YouTube video of the searchers last night. Imagine a blizzard or rain in fog in the mountains at night? And hand flying an old Russian dump truck helicopter with primative instruments … at best?!?!
Silimar thing happened in Ukraine with a couple of their senior leaders on board flying into a building in fog and rain.
Suicide missions.

EDITED: I stand corrected on the type of helicopter. It was an Italian-made Bell 212 (aka Bell (Twin) Huey. Iran has been under US sanctions for decades after looking up their air force fleet it seems they fly plenty of US and European aircraft for VIPs. Including a fleet of Chinook twin rotor helicopters. But Soviet fighter jets.

Maybe he stood up and looked outside for the ground?
