NYPD rolls out ‘barnacle’ windshield boots to force violators to pay

The NYPD is unleashing barnacles to battle parking pirates.

The department this week said it will begin using “windshield boots” — a 17-pound device that attaches to a vehicle’s windshield like a barnacle and remains there until a scofflaw pays their tickets — on illegally parked trucks.

The contraption is also known as a Barnacle Device for its commercial-grade suction cups that attach to glass with 1,000 pounds of force, making it impossible to remove — like the sticky crustaceans on their oceanic hosts, officials said.

“The use of the Barnacle device is part of a pilot program,” an NYPD spokeswoman said Saturday. “The NYPD has leased four devices and we will use them to target illegally parked trucks and vehicles with excess fines.”

The panels cost $250 each per month to operate. So far, the city has leased four, which it used during an operation in Queens going after illegally parked trucks, the NYPD said.

The NYPD and the city didn’t immediately answer questions about how far they planned to expand the pilot program and how many more they would buy.

If you owe thousand, would it not be easier and cheaper to just get the windshield itself replaced? There are guys that come to your house and do in it minutes in your driveway.
Its true 😂 guys go around with a van and change your windshield.

I suppose the fine for a windshield replacement company will be much much higher - maybe even lose their business license. There’s probably a gps tracker in the barnacle.

Why doesn’t the city just impound the vehicles? If vehicles aren’t claimed in 60 days, the vehicles are sold at auction.

How many of those will the parking enforcement officers carry while they're on foot, given that they leave their vehicles and cover distances?

Yah, typical government bureaucrats. They didn’t think of the logistics. Yet another city program to waste taxpayers money. Only the windshield boot manufacturer wins. They probably signed a 5 year sweet contract with the city.

1) You have to get it to your driveway.
2) You are asking them to commit a crime.

Why don't they just impound the vehicles for unpaid fines? Then if nobody pick it up after a set amount of time, they can send them to auction. It also gets the vehicles off the streets.

Looks like it works on suction. Drill hole in device to break the seal. Try not to drill into your window shield

Wow. Why didn't the designers think of that? 😜

BTW, if you google it, there are plenty of non-destructive ways to defeat the device.
