They did this because it allows the Region to apply for financial help from the province to help pay for extra police and other security issues.
My guess regardless of the weather it's going to be a zoo along the Parkway, Clifton Hill and major arteries coming into and out of the city.

its an over reaction to a potential traffic problem

can't they just ask the Province and the OPP for extra assistance?

don't these levels of government communicate with each other?

With The expected crowds its a lot easier to get it this way. And to immediately deal with problems that come up on the fly.

Is that it?
No other powers freed up by a formal declaration?

It really does seem like this is just dotting "i"s and crossing "t"s bureaucratically.

It's more than just traffic. There will be more paramedics and firemen on duty for any medical emergencies.
How many car accidents do you think there will be? People will be anxious to leave and minor fender benders might turn onto some fists of furry, lol.
No doubt those wacko Hamas supporters will show up to try and ruin the day.

I recently moved to NF from Hamilton to be closer to my grand kids. Traffic heading here on weekends starting Friday nights is already stop and go rarely getting over 60 km NOW The tourist areas are jammed as well as you can now get the GO Bus and GO train. But hey NF IS a tourist town. I have relatives in NRP and NF Fire. Theyve been told expect the worst. Days off Monday may be cancelled. Traffic will be backed up to Hamilton if the estimate ogfa million people is true

On both sides. Assume they might shut down air traffic for awhile as well. Falls on both sides SB a zoo. Look for someone to fall over the side...

Awfully long reach for HAMAS, and not the kind of soft target they prefer. Might expect that from the right wing loonies, though - maybe farther South down the path...

I don't think he meant Hamas themselves. I think he meant the disruptive, loud and aggressive protesters who think they are accomplishing something by making everything about them and ruining things for everybody else, most of whom don't even care about the ME.

But yeah, I'm sure they think this would be a good place to be shit disturbers.

It's a responsible plan to enact to deal with not only the million people expected, but in case any emergency occurring. If they didn't and chaos ensued, you'd be whining about how incompetent the government was in not being adequately prepared.

As noted in the actual article, the declaration is what gives them the power to request OPP assistance within their municipal jurisdiction. And coordinate through the province things like ambulances and firetrucks and air ambulances to be temporarily re-positioned in strategic places. And it unlocks access to reserve funds outside the normal operations budgets to pay for the out-of-town police, fire and ambulance staff and overtime .

All of this gets coordinated through the Province and if applicable, the Feds.

For instance, airspace is a strictly federal jurisdiction. And over Niagara Falls, there is an international border. There is already a special airspace designation over the Falls to deal with sightseeing. I fully expect that a NOTAM will be issued for a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) over the Falls in particular. That needs to be coordinated between NavCanada and the US FAA. Those are just a few things that come to mind.

BTW, You get pretty outraged at stuff you don't know much about. Why is that?

Ever thought of running for public office so you can sort everything out in government?

I'll be leaving Toronto around 11am to go to the Falls.
Hopefully 4 hours is enough to get there

I was looking for a good spot within driving distance of Toronto to see it because I know NF is going to be like lemmings jumping off a cliff!

Sherbrooke Quebec maybe.

But then I used a Solar Eclipse website and discovered Harbourfront will have a darkness magnitude of .9987 and 99.96% obscuration for about 20 seconds. And around 2 hours of weird light. I don' thing the extra 3 minutes and 0.0013 magnitude and 0.004% more obscuration is worth the certain insanity of a days drive to and from Niagara Falls with a million other lemmings.

So for me, I'm going to base my driving decision on the weather and cloud cover. And if it's going to be even halfway decent here, I'm going to sit outside on the beach right by the lake! No driving, no bumping into ppl with everyone's cameras etc.

Just grab a zero-gravity lounger, a some snacks, maybe including a little tasty🍄, a nice playlist and water taxi over to the south shore of the Island to enjoy thefreak of natural wonder in peace.

Some advice from someone who lives in the Niagara Region.
Don't go to city. If you do, go park at a local mall like Niagara Square right off the QEW, or even Rona across the street from Niagara Square.
Maybe even go to the Niagara Outlet mall in Niagara on the Lake which is also right off the QEW. It has a huge parking lot.
Both are quick jumps off and on the QEW.

Something to think about.

Red House over yonder.
How about this? Get a room overlooking the Falls with your favorite escort and plan to orgasm at the exact time of the eclipse.

Or to get closer to nature - Switch this to on the lap boom boom on the Maid of the Mist boat. That way you get the overall wetness and full roar of the Falls. You will need to work it out with the raincoats and finish the deed before the period of darkness ends. You can pretend you were members of an ancient indigenous tribe at a previous eclipse to fully align with historical spirits.

The full duration of this event from dimming onset to sun reappearance is only 2 1/2 hours. I usually book 2 hour appointments. I can always last more than the 2 minutes 49 seconds of total darkness at maximum arrousal. The Prez will pack a cell phone flashlight.

And don't trust those gas station sunglasses.
