usb c to displayport suddenly stopped working

Would appreciate some assistance from the tech experts here on Terb.
I'm using a usb c to displayport cable to connect to HP monitor.
Monitor was working fine until it suddenly stopped working. Signal not reaching monitor.
I did some trouble shooting and determined the cable is fine. That's my belief now.
I have another very slow backup laptop I connected the cable to and the monitor display comes up fine.
I'm running Windows 10. I checked all systems updates are up to date.
When I reboot the laptop the Lenovo logo comes up on the monitor but then it goes black and the login screen comes up on my laptop only.
The monitor then stays black and no signal from laptop to monitor.
I checked the display setting and the monitor is not detected on my primary laptop but is detected on the backup laptop.
I checked the device manager and the HP monitor does come up when the cable is connected so it does recognize there is a monitor there but just no signal.
The device manager lists the monitor as running fine using the standard driver in c:\windows\system32\Drivers\monitor.sys
So display setting does not detect monitor but device manager says device is working fine.
Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Cables are finicky like this. Just buy another cable and see if it works so at least you have a spare. I've had good luck with Amazon Basics and Ugreen cables so far and they're fairly. Be aware that there are chepaer cables out there that might not be as good.

This won't help the OP as he's using a USB C to DisplayPort cable. You're idea is right though. If there's a second DisplayPort port on his monitor, he should try using the cable on it. Sometimes, disconnecting and reconnecting fixes these intermittent cable issues.

You could try the following:

1. Use the same cable but try a different source on the monitor. Am sure it will have atleast 2 HDMI ports.
2. Use another cable.
3. Try with a different monitor.
I did use the same cable on another source (another laptop I have as backup this laptop runs very slow hence backup) and the monitor works.
I don't currently have another cable. I've ordered 2 but it'll take a few days for delivery. I ordered usb c to displayport which I currently have and I also ordered a usb c to hdmi.
I don't have another monitor.

I've ordered 2 new cables but they'll take a few days for delivery. Maybe longer than a week. April 4th apparently expected delivery date they provided. I did confirm the current cable I have works with another laptop though but that laptop I don't use. Only for backup. It's very slow. For emergency only. Or for times like this I can evaluate if a cable is faulty.

The monitor only has 1 displayport.
I have 2 usb c ports on my laptop. One port I use for monitor and the other for the charging cable.
A few days ago perhaps yesterday or the day before I noticed that the monitor would go off and come back on.
I believe that's when the problem started. It didn't just go black and stay black right away.
At that time I moved the cable to the other usb c port on the laptop and it was good again.
Then it happened again so I switched back to the original usb c port.
This morning I had a virtual meeting. All was fine. After the virtual meeting the monitor went black and now it stayed black no signal to monitor.

Where did you order the cables from? I only ask because a week seems an extraordinary long time. Assuming you used Amazon, it should only take a few days.

Oh by source I meant input source on the monitor. But yeah you could try using the HDMI. Another monitor could be your TV, but again, you'd need a HDMI cable I suppose.
My laptop does not have an HDMI port unfortunately. I did order a usb c to hdmi cable today but expected delivery is Apr 4.

Yeah, I figured your monitor only had 1 DP.

USB C ports can be finnicky because they're not the same inside even though they look the same on the outside. Some ports might not be able to output video, others are only for chaging, while others can't output DP properly. It's a huge pain in the ass.

At least you're not on a Mac where they limit the number of monitors you can plug into a laptop. I think Windows can support up to 10 montiors.

The laptop is about 2 years old. I still consider it relatively new. There were no issues with the setup until now.
Actually about a year ago the speaker cable I had connected to the monitor stopped working so I started to connect it directly to the laptop but today when I tested the backup laptop I found that the speakers were working fine when connected to the monitor using the same usb c to displayport cable.

I did a search and purchased the axGear cables. I have never heard of them but price was cheap. Searched axGear and it's a company based in BC. I did not order from Amazon. Bestbuy was the broker for the usb c to displayport cable. Later I decided to find if there is a usb c to hdmi cable and there was. Also axGear and the broker was Walmart.
I've never heard of axGear before. The company may be based in BC, but the products are made in China. Hopefully, you read some reviews before purchasing.

Take care when buying stuff online even from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. Products on those sites might be fullfilled by a third-party i.e. not Amazon, Best Buy, etc. It might be a bit tricky to get customer service or you might end up paying brokerage fees if the item comes from the States.

On product pages, look for things that say Ships / Sold from Amazon, etc

It was currently set at 1.2 so I changed it to 1.1 and the monitor came up again.
Although there is a flicker and it sometimes goes black for a second at a time.
Not ideal but I'm hoping it's a cable issue and when my new cables arrive it will resolve the issue.
In the meantime I can use the monitor with some discomfort with the flickering and intermittent black outs.
The speakers are also working when connected directly to the monitor again.

I've never seen a monitor where you can change the DP settings inside of it. Odd that switching between DP 1.1 and 1.2 would cause the flickering and interemittent blank screen. Your monitor seems quite old if you can only switch to version 1.2. I believe the current version of DP is 2.1. Maybe your monitor has a firmware update?

I know you checked your display drivers already, but maybe try reinstalling if the moniro still gives you the problem?

If you go to display settings, make sure under Multiple Displays that you have it as "extend these displays" so that both the laptop and the monitor will work. It is a setting that for some reason unchecks itself sometimes.

Yes, I did check that yesterday. It could not detect the monitor and that option to "extend to both displays" was greyed out as a result.
