They have the best team maybe they've ever had and attendance is still poor. Everyone wants more teams in Canada, the only city left is Quebec city and is there enough money there? Or the gta could probably support one more? Would they have to play in hamilton, who else has a rink? The Canadian teams are already losing by paying the players in usd.

What will happen when they eventually become shitty again. I say they're gone by 2030.

Winnipeg is just tiny by big league standards with a population of under 900,000. That's the issue likely. Unless you give seasons to the moose and bears, there aren't a lot of fans.

(That said, did anyone see the audience at the Leafs game in Phoenix?? There are OHL teams playing to bigger crowds!!)

Toronto could support 2 additional NHL franchises. The Extended Golden Horseshoe now has a population of over 10M - the 3rd or 4th biggest urban area in North America. If you say it takes 2M people to support an NHL franchise, then there's 4 or 5 times that population in the EGH.

In terms of sheer size, the Greater Houston area has over 7M people. That's the obvious un-franchised US city for expansion. But Atlanta has failed twice and see my comments about Phoenix above.

I'm surprised Winnipeg got another team to begin with. If the richest man in Canada wasn't behind it there's no way it would have happened. The NHL has outgrown small markets like Winnipeg. Next to move will be Ottawa, and I don't think the NHL is even remotely interested in Quebec. Houston, Kansas City, and Atlanta appear to be the front runners. There was even a rumour that Hartford might be back in play, but I find that hard to believe. The problem with Hamilton or a second Toronto franchise would be the payments required to Buffalo and Toronto for enchroaching on their territory. That would be a very expensive additional cost.

XL Center in Hartford is "too old", it would have to be replaced.
And add Sacramento to your list. Apparently the NBA Kings owner was a final bidder for the Senators last year, and has been rumored to be looking at the Coyotes.

Good points. I forgot to add Utah. The owner of the Jazz has made it well known he would like an NHL team, and people in the league are listening.
Here's an article about Hartford.

The Sens are averaging 17340 a game this year...They aren't going anywhere.

Expect a site for a new arena to be announced some time this year. There are many possibilities that are being looked at.

Michael Andlauer is making all the right moves

Right now they are just looking to do upgrades to the CTC. They plan on staying there until at least 2030 so don't hold your breath on a new downtown arena anytime soon.

The arena in Sacramento can't accommodate hockey similar to the way Barclay's Cneter in Brooklyn couldn't for the Islanders

A lot of things fell into place for the NHL to return to the Pegger. Weak U.S. dollar a low price to pay for a Thrashers franchise with owners butting heads and a fairly low relocation fee. What's more surprising is no one from Houston or Kansas City made a bid for the Thrashers.

The NHL has too many teams. And they have too many teams losing money and not enough high caliber talent to support an expanded league. 32 teams is already too much.

Arizona troubles: Bettman's commitment to keep the franchise alive and well in Arizona.

Winnpeg troubles: Bettman's commitment to move the franchise to a desert.

Phoenix is a 5M person A-list US city and growing. The league clearly wants to establish a trademark there and they've already lost out twice on another A-list Southern city, Atlanta.

Winnipeg is a 800,000 city that may reach a million people by 2050. Maybe.
